Atene Femenino was a women's organization in Bolivia, founded in 1923.Tétreault, Mary Ann, Women and Revolution in Africa, Asia, and the New World' It has been referred to as the first women's organization in Bolivia. Atene Femenino was founded in La Paz by Maria Luisa Sanchez Bustamente de Uricoste in 1923. In this time period, Bolivia was an extremely conservative society and no position is society was accepted for a woman other than that of a wife-mother or a nun. Bolivia had no feminist movement whatsoever, although the poet Adela Zamudio had acted as a feminist role model individually. The Atene Femenino was founded by white upper-class women inspired by a similar organization in Chile. Its purpose was to work for women's rights and promote an intellectual life and a wider space in society for women. La Paz (), officially known as Nuestra Señora de La Paz (Spanish pronunciation: ), is the seat of government of the Plurinational State of Bolivia. Paz Juana Plácida Adela Rafaela Zamudio Rivero, or more popularly known as Adela Zamudio (1854–1928) was a Bolivian poet, feminist, and educator. She is considered the most famous Bolivian poet, and is credited as founding the country's feminist movement. In her writing, she also used the pen-name Soledad. Etelvina Villanueva Y Saavedra
Etelvina Villanueva y Saavedra (1897–1969) was a Bolivian poet and educator. In 1923, María Sánchez Bustamante organized the first feminist group in Bolivia El Ateneo Femenino with the goals of attaining civil and political equality as well as furthering their artistic growth. Charter members were artists, journalists, teachers and writers and included Leticia Antezana de Alberti, Elvira Benguria, Fidelia Corral de Sánchez, Marina Lijerón (who would later marry to Betachini), Julia Reyes Ortiz de Cañedo, Ema Alina Palfray, Emma Pérez de Carvajal, María Josefa Saavedra, Ana Rosa Tornero de Bilbao la Vieja, Ana Rosa Vásquez, and Etelvina Villanueva y Saavedra. Although the Constitution of Bolivia guarantees equal rights for women and men, women in Bolivia face struggles and discrimination in several aspects of their lives. According to the Human Development Report published by the Office of the United Nations Development Programme, in Bolivia "men receive more and better education than women, receive increased and better health assistance than women, and have the possibility to generate greater income while working less...if we consider that women, as opposed to men, also have...the almost exclusive responsibility for domestic work".
