Asturias Autonomous Football Team
The Asturias autonomous football team is the regional football team for Asturias. They are not affiliated with FIFA or UEFA, because it is represented internationally by the Spain national football team. The team only plays friendlies. History Cantabric Federation The Regional Cantabric Federation of Football Clubs was founded on 9 December 1915 with the aim to represent all the clubs in the Province of Oviedo. On 22 November 1916, the Spanish Football Federation allowed the clubs of Cantabria to leave the Northern Regional Championship and join the newly created Cantabrian Regional Federation, along with clubs from Oviedo, soon to be renamed Asturias. In 1917, the Cantabrians joined forces with the Asturian clubs, and as the 'Cantabric Team', they played four official matches between 1917 and 1918, competing in the defunct Copa Príncipe de Asturias, an inter-regional competition organized by the Spanish Federation. The Royal Football Federation of the Principality of Asturias ( es, Real Federación de Fútbol del Principado de Asturias; RFFPA) is the federation responsible for managing association football in the Asturias, Principality of Asturias. Manuel Argüelles
Manuel Argüelles Sánchez (9 July 1897-10 December 1958) was a Spanish footballer who played as a forward. Club career Born in Gijón, he began to play football at the youth ranks of his hometown club Sportiva Gijonesa, for he played until 1913, when at the age of just 16, he joined Sporting de Gijón, featuring alongside the likes of the Villaverde brothers (Fernando and Senén). After 14 seasons with the club (1913–1927), he left for Athletic Madrid, for which he played just one season before retiring. International career Because he was a Real Oviedo player, he was eligible to play for the Cantabric national team, a side consisting of players from the provinces of Asturias and Cantabria, and in 1917, he was summoned by them to represent them at the 1917 Prince of Asturias Cup, an official inter-regional competition organized by the RFEF. An own goal, also called a self goal, is where a player performs actions that result in them or their team scoring a goal on themselves, often resulting in a point for the opposing team, such as when a football player kicks a ball into their own net or goal, awarding the other team a point. El Molinón
Estadio El Molinón (), officially Estadio Municipal El Molinón-Enrique Castro "Quini", is an association football stadium in Gijón, Asturias, Spain. The stadium is the home ground of Real Sporting de Gijón. With a capacity of 29,029 seats, El Molinón is the 20th largest stadium in Spain and the second largest in Asturias. History El Molinón is the oldest professional football field in Spain. It has been in use since at least 1908, and is located on the site of an old watermill, hence the stadium's name, the Spanish word for "big mill". Santander, Spain
Santander () is the capital of the autonomous community and historical region of Cantabria situated on the north coast of Spain. It is a port city located east of Gijón and west of Bilbao with a population of 172,000 (2017). The Estadio El Sardinero was a multi-use stadium in Santander, Spain. It was initially used as the stadium of Racing de Santander matches. It was replaced by the current Estadio El Sardinero in 1988. The capacity of the stadium was 20,000 spectators. The Cantabria autonomous football team is the regional football team for Cantabria, Spain. They are not affiliated with FIFA or UEFA and therefore are only allowed to play friendly matches. History The Northern Federation In the early 20th century, the Cantabrian players were part of a combined 'North' team, however, this team usually only featured players from the Basque provinces of Biscay and Gipuzkoa, each of which was also organizing their own representative matches occasionally. This 'North' team, which later evolved into the Basque Country team, participated in the first Prince of Asturias Cup tournament in 1915 at Madrid, and they won the title after beating the Catalan team 1–0 and then holding Centro (a team formed by players from the center of Spain) to a 1-1 draw. 1923–24 Prince Of Asturias Cup
The 1923–24 Prince of Asturias Cup was the sixth tournament of the Prince of Asturias Cup, which is an inter-regional football competition contested by the regional selections of Spain.
