Asturias, Patria Querida
"" (, ast, Asturies, patria querida) is the official anthem of the autonomous community of Asturias, in Spain. This adaptation of a much slower song from the neighbouring lands of Cantabria ("") was appointed as official anthem after a contest in Oviedo in the 1890s. It has both a Castilian (Spanish) and an Asturian version. It is also a popular melody for bagpipers. In the mid-2000s, it was discovered that the first song lyrics were written in Cuba. The father of the author had returned to his beloved Asturias to die, the author—Ignacio Piñeiro—dedicated the song to his father. The music was different; it is believed to be a melody that Upper Silesian miners from the area of Opole Silesia—that worked in Asturian coal mines at the beginning of the 20th century—had brought to Asturias. The flag of Asturias shows the "Cruz de la Victoria" (Victory Cross) in yellow ( PMS 109) over blue (PMS 829). History The origin of the flag of Asturias is in 1808, during the Peninsular War. As there was not any Spanish official flag yet, Asturians created the current flag, without any separatist intention in the war against the Napoleon's empire. In its first version, it included the motto ''Asturias jamás vencida'' (Asturias never defeated). Color specifications Design According to the tradition, the Victory Cross was carried by Pelagius, first King of Asturias, in the decisive Battle of Covadonga against the Moors in 722. International Brigades
The International Brigades ( es, Brigadas Internacionales) were military units set up by the Communist International to assist the Popular Front government of the Second Spanish Republic during the Spanish Civil War. The organization existed for two years, from 1936 until 1938. It is estimated that during the entire war, between 40,000 and 59,000 members served in the International Brigades, including some 10,000 who died in combat. Beyond the Spanish Civil War, "International Brigades" is also sometimes used interchangeably with the term foreign legion in reference to military units comprising foreigners who volunteer to fight in the military of another state, often in times of war. The headquarters of the brigade was located at the Gran Hotel, Albacete, Castilla-La Mancha. Asturian Culture
The Asturian culture is an Epipalaeolithic or Mesolithic archaeological culture identified by a single form of Cultural artifact, artefact: the Asturian pick-axe, and found only in coastal locations of Prehistoric Iberia, Iberia, especially in Eastern Asturias and Western Cantabria. It is believed that the Asturian tool was used for seafood gathering, and the sites where they are found are associated with very large shell-middens (''concheros'' in Spanish), which can fill caves to the ceiling. In other respects the culture is similar to the preceding Azilian of the area, which also extended further to the east along the coast. Whether there is an overlap in dating between Azilian and Asturian sites has been much discussed. Two ''concheros'' begin at 9280±440 BP, whereas Azilian dates come to an end after about 9500 BP. Asturian Miners' Strike Of 1934
The Asturian miners' strike of 1934 was a major strike action undertaken by regional miners against the 1933 Spanish general election, which redistributed political power from the leftists to conservatives in the Second Spanish Republic. The strike lasted two weeks from 4 October to 19 October 1934 in Asturias. The election led to the conservative Spanish Confederation of the Autonomous Right (CEDA), securing a parliamentary majority in the Spanish government on 6 October. The strike and subsequent demonstrations eventually developed into a violent revolutionary uprising in an attempt to overthrow the conservative regime. The revolutionaries took over the province of Asturias by force, killing a large portion of the region's police and religious leaders.
