Asti, California
Asti is an unincorporated community in Sonoma County, California, United States. It is located near U.S. Route 101 in the Alexander Valley between Cloverdale, Geyserville and Healdsburg, and was named after the city in northern Italy (toponym in Italian instead of Piedmontese) In 1881, Andrea Sbarboro established two communities, Asti and Chianti, as part of his Italian Swiss Agricultural Colony. A plaque at the southeast corner of Asti Road and Asti Post Office Road commemorates the colony, whose wines won ten gold medals in international competition. The colony is California Historical Landmark #621. Located in the Alexander Valley AVA, Asti is the home of Asti Winery. By the mid-1950s, it had become the second-most-visited destination in California, after Disneyland. Asti had a post office which closed in 1978. It used the ZIP Code 95413. Northwestern Pacific Railroad
The Northwestern Pacific Railroad is a regional shortline railroad utilizing a stretch of the 271 mile mainline between Schellville and Windsor with freight and Sonoma–Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) commuter trains. The Köppen climate classification is one of the most widely used climate classification systems. Italian Swiss Colony (wine)
Italian Swiss Colony was a 19th and 20th-century American wine company and brand. Based in Asti, Sonoma County, California, Italian Swiss Colony was at one time the leading wine producer in California. Establishment and growth In 1881, Andrea Sbarboro founded an agricultural colony at Asti (named for Asti in Italy), primarily focused on grapes. Sbarboro's intent was to establish a profitable enterprise which would provide work for the many Italians who had migrated to San Francisco (although there were at first some Italian speaking Swiss from Ticino, thus giving the colony its name, it soon became an entirely Italian-American enterprise.) The corporation had originally been organized to allow the workers to eventually buy ownership, but this never developed, and it remained a normal joint-stock company.
