The Association for Democracy and Justice () was a short-lived liberal political organisation in Hong Kong during the mid-1980s as the predecessor of the Hong Kong Association for Democracy and People's Livelihood (ADPL). History It was founded in 1985 in the background of the Sino-British Joint Declaration in December 1984 which determined the Chinese sovereignty of Hong Kong after 1997 and the introduction of the representative democracy by the colonial government. It was "a pseudo-political party in preparation for the coming elections for various positions in public office." Hong Kong Association For Democracy And People's Livelihood
The Hong Kong Association for Democracy and People's Livelihood (ADPL) is a Hong Kong pro-democracy social-liberal political party catering to grassroots interest with a strong basis in Sham Shui Po. Established on 26 October 1986, it was one of the three major pro-democracy groups along with the Meeting Point and the Hong Kong Affairs Society in the 1980s. The ADPL survived through the great unification of the pro-democracy camp in the 1991 and became the only pro-democracy party to sit in the Beijing-controlled Provisional Legislative Council in 1997. It was ousted for the first time in the 1998 Legislative Council election. Its veteran former chairman Frederick Fung was the only legislator for the ADPL until he was defeated in the 2016 Legislative Council election in which the party was ousted from the legislature for the second time. British Hong Kong
Hong Kong was a colony and later a dependent territory of the British Empire from 1841 to 1997, apart from a period of occupation under the Japanese Empire from 1941 to 1945 during the Pacific War. The colonial period began with the British occupation of Hong Kong Island in 1841, during the First Opium War between the British and the Qing dynasty. The Qing had wanted to enforce its prohibition of opium importation within the dynasty that was being exported mostly from British India, as it was causing widespread addiction among its populace. The island was ceded to Britain by the Treaty of Nanking, ratified by the Daoguang Emperor in the aftermath of the war of 1842. It was established as a crown colony in 1843. Sino-British Joint Declaration
The Sino-British Joint Declaration is a treaty between the governments of the United Kingdom and China signed in 1984 setting the conditions in which Hong Kong was transferred to Chinese control and for the governance of the territory after 1 July 1997. Hong Kong had been a colony of the British Empire since 1842 after the First Opium War and its territory was expanded on two occasions; first in 1860 with the addition of Kowloon Peninsula and Stonecutters Island, and again in 1898 when Britain obtained a 99-year lease for the New Territories. The date of the handover in 1997 marked the end of this lease. The Chinese government declared in the treaty its basic policies for governing Hong Kong after the transfer. 1985 Hong Kong Electoral Reform
The 1985 Hong Kong electoral reform introduced the first ever indirect election to the colonial legislature during the last years of the British colonial rule in Hong Kong. The reform proposals was first carried out in the Green Paper: the Further Development of Representative Government in Hong Kong in July 1984 right before the Sino-British Joint Declaration in December. The reform laid the foundation of the representative democracy in Hong Kong which developed throughout the last years of the colonial rule and succeeded by the democratic development in Hong Kong after the handover of Hong Kong in 1997. The Hong Kong Christian Industrial Committee ( Chinese: 香港基督教工業委員會, also called as HKCIC) is a non-governmental pressure group that focuses on labor welfare policy and industrial safety. The group was founded in 1966, originally as a unit of the Hong Kong Christian Council, and became an auxiliary organization later to gain more independence. Its predecessor was the Christian Industrial Evangelism Committee, which was a study group formed in 1961. Its special focus in 2001 was on the working conditions of toy workers for Hasbro, Mattel, McDonald's and Disney in Southern China. Ding Lik-kiu
Dr. Ding Lik-kiu ( Chinese: 陳立僑, 1921 in Raj of Sarawak – 24 June 2008 in San Francisco, United States) was a prominent Hong Kong social activist in the 1970s and 80s. Biography Ding was born in an impoverished family in Borneo (modern day Sarawak) in 1921. His father was a poor merchant and murdered on the road when Ding was a baby. When he was 5 his mother found a rich local merchant to adopt him, but could not bear to part with him on the doorstep of the merchant's house and took him back home. A year later she died from the vitamin deficiency heart disease Beriberi. Ding was taken in by the local Methodist missionary school and through a series of scholarships eventually studied medicine at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and then went back to Borneo to serve as a medical missionary, where he helped set up Christ Hospital. Lau Chin-shek
Lau Chin-shek (born 12 September 1944 in Guangzhou, Guangdong with family root in Shunde, Guangdong) is the President of the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions and a vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Christian Industrial Committee. He was born in Guangzhou and had a secondary school education. He was a member of the Legislative Council from 1991 to 2008. Background Lau smuggled from Guangzhou to Hong Kong in 1960. Since the 1980s, he has been a labour activist, working to help factory workers in Sham Shui Po and Cheung Sha Wan, where working conditions were poor. During the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, Lau and other pro-democracy activists expressed sympathy and support to the student demonstrators who had gathered at Tiananmen Square.
