Asse
Asse () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant. It comprises the towns of Asse proper, Bekkerzeel, Kobbegem, Mollem, Relegem and Zellik. Asse is also situated in the Pajottenland. As of 2020, Asse had a total population of 32,958. The total area is 49.64 km² which gives a population density of circa 660 inhabitants per km². History Asse (formerly spelt "Assche") was probably inhabited by the Celtic tribe of the Nervii. The name itself probably comes from a pre-Celtic word meaning "water" (cf Esch-, Es- and Axe- prefixes elsewhere in Europe). It was probably inhabited from an early date; stone tools have been found in various locations. The fertility of the soil and the relief which rises above the wetter plains of present-day Flanders would also suggest that his would have been an early area of settlement. Today the current Marquess of Assche still resides in Belgium. Theodore Charles Antoine van der Noot, 8th Marquess of Assche and 6th Count van der Noot (14 July 1818 – 13 August 1889) was a Belgian courtier and member of high society. Career During the Holland period the Marquess of Assche was Lord-Chamberlain to William III of the Netherlands. Family He was the eldest son of Maximilien Louis van der Noot, 7th Marquess of Assche and his second wife Adelaïde Countess d'Yve de Bavay (1792-1879). Elisabeth, Countess van der Noot, Countess of Assche (July 22, 1899 in Brussels – March 27, 1974) was a Belgian aristocratic lady. During the Second World War, she became friendly with the highest circles of the German occupation authorities, whilst in a few occasions helping the resistance. Asse (hills)
The Asse is a small hill range in the district of Wolfenbüttel in southeastern Lower Saxony with a median height of 200 metres ASL; the highest elevation is the Remlinger Herse with a height of 234 m. There are more than 600 different plants found here; the Asse is mostly covered by trees. It has been inhabited since the 6th millennium BC by farmers coming from the Danube region. For several hundred years, salt has been mined in Asse. One of these mines, Schacht Asse II, is now used to store low- and medium-grade radioactive waste produced by medicine and nuclear power plants. Asse is a former ''Samtgemeinde'' ("collective municipality") in the district of Wolfenbüttel, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated approximately 10 km southeast of Wolfenbüttel. On 1 January 2015 it merged with the ''Samtgemeinde'' Schöppenstedt to form the new ''Samtgemeinde'' Elm-Asse. It is named after the Asse, a small chain of hills in the municipality. The Asse II mine (Schacht Asse II) is a former salt mine used as a deep geological repository for radioactive waste in the Asse Mountains of Wolfenbüttel, Lower Saxony, Germany.
