Assam Valley Literary Award
The Assam Valley Literary Award ( as, অসম উপত্যকা সাহিত্য বঁটা) was conceived in the year 1990 by ''Williamson Magor Education Trust'' to honour creative writers who have enhanced Assamese literature. It is given to writers of Assam once a year. The award was instituted by the Williamson Magor Group, a tea company. History The award was announced by Shri B.M. Khaitan, Chairman, Williamson Magor Group of Industries, Tea major at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Assam Valley School on 11 February 1990, at Harchurah in Sonitpur district of Assam. The award comprises cash award, a scroll of honour made of Assam "Muga" silk and a specially designed golden trophy. This trophy has been designed by the artist of Assam, Shri Shobha Brahma. Harekrishna Deka (born 1943) is one of Assam's contemporary writers whose excellence in multiple genres is well attested by his works as well by the influence he has had on generations of readers and creative practitioners—his assured style and manner of exposition serving as the bridge between the Assamese greats of the twentieth century and the innovatively inclined writers of the present. As a man whose professional career involved his service in Assam Police, Deka has now a substantial body of writings that showcase his intellectual bearings and adeptly reflect the transitional phase in contemporary Assamese literature. Imran Shah (writer)
Imran Shah (born 23 November 1933), also known as Nawab Imran Shah is an Indian Assamese language writer, poet, novelist, and scholar. He also writes under the pen names Ishan Dutta, Anamika Baruah, Kumbhakarna, and Animesh Baruah. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2021, for his contributions to literature and education. Early life Imran Shah was born on 23 November 1933 in Sivasagar, Assam. He was the youngest child of Muhammad Shah and Mariam Nessa. Shah attended '2 Nong Dhai Ali Prathamik Vidyalaya' (No. 2 Dhai Ali Primary School), followed by attendance at the Government High School, Sivasagar. Rongbong Terang
Rongbong Terang is a literary figure from Assam, India. He is a Padmashree Awardee for his literary work ''Rongmilir Hanhi'' (1981). Rongbong Terang worked as an Assamese teacher in Diphu Govt. Boy High School. Then as an Assamese lecturer in Diphu Govt. College and acted as Principal-in-charge on 1 April 2000 and retired on 30 November 2002. He was also the president of Asam Sahitya Sabha for two terms. Nagen Saikia
Nagen Saikia ( as, নগেন শইকীয়া; born 11 February 1939) is an Indian writer. He was formerly a professor of Dibrugarh University. Saikia had also been a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1986-1992 and was the vice-chairman of the Upper House from 1990-1992. Saikia started his career as a teacher and went on to serve in different reputed institutions in various categories. He also delivered lectures on various topics about Assamese literature, including in the US and England. He has published numerous literary essays, short stories, novels, books and articles, to his credit. Nalinidhar Bhattacharya (4 December 1921 – 1 September 2016) was an Indian poet and literary critic from Assam. He won the Sahitya Akademi Award for his collection ''Mahat Oitijhya'' in 2002. Arun Sarma (3 November 1931 – 27 March 2017) was a writer of Assam. Arun Sarma was one of Assam's contemporary playwrights and is particularly known for his unconventional plays with some elements of drama. Lakshmi Nandan Bora (15 June 1932 – 3 June 2021) was an Indian novelist and short story writer in the Assamese language, known for over 60 books he has authored, including award winning novels, ''Patal Bhairavi'' and ''Kayakalpa''. Nirupama Borgohain (née Tamuli; as, নিৰূপমা বৰগোহাঞি; 1932– ) is an Indian journalist and novelist in the Assamese language. She is a Sahitya Akademi award winner, best known for her novel ''Abhiyatri''. In the year 2015, she decided to return her Sahitya Akademi award in protest against the rising intolerance in the society. She was a recipient of the Assam Valley Literary Award.
