Askov Højskole
Askov Højskole is a Danish folk high school, that is located in the village of Askov in southern Jutland between Kolding and Esbjerg. It was founded in 1865 as an extension of Denmark's first folk high school, which had been established in 1844 in Rødding by Christian Flor. The first principal of Askov Højskole was Ludvig Schrøder. History After 1864, a group of teachers, along with Ludvig Schrøder as their director, wanted to continue their work north of the border. Askov became known for its introduction of the "extended" højskole in 1878, which had longer terms. A number of extended subjects were offered, which were primarily intended for students (both male and female) who had previously attended other folk high schools. The school attracted highly qualified teachers such as the physicist and inventor Poul la Cour, whose windturbine experiment had been groundbreaking at the time. Poul La Cour
Poul la Cour (13 April 1846 – 24 April 1908) was a Danish scientist, inventor and educationalist. Today la Cour is especially recognized for his early work on wind power, both experimental work on aerodynamics and practical implementation of wind power plants. He worked most of his life at Askov Folk High School where he developed the historic genetic method of teaching the sciences. Early in his life he was a telegraphic inventor working with multiplex telegraphy. Biography Poul la Cour was born on 13 April 1846 on a farm near Ebeltoft in Denmark. Efterskole
An efterskole (literally ''"afterschool"'', plural efterskoler) is a unique type of Danish voluntary independent residential school for young people between the age of 14 to 18. At an efterskole, students can choose to spend one, two or three years finishing their primary education, and currently some 28,500 students attend one of approximately 260 such schools throughout Denmark. Esbjerg Sløjdhøjskole, previously known as Askov Sløjdlærerskole, is a folk high school in Esbjerg, Denmark which teaches handicrafts under the principles of sloyd. The school has been integrated into University College South Denmark. Nikolaj Frederik Severin Grundtvig (; 8 September 1783 – 2 September 1872), most often referred to as N. F. S. Christian Flor
Christian Flor (162628 September 1697) was a German composer and organist. Working at churches in Rendsburg and Lüneburg, he was widely known for vocal and organ compositions. He composed one of the earliest Passion oratorios, in 1667. Life Born in Neukirchen, Ostholstein, Flor came from a family of pastors spread throughout Schleswig-Holstein and was born as the son of the pastor Otto Flor and his wife Catharina. He probably received his musical education in Hamburg and Lübeck, studying with Heinrich Scheidemann and Franz Tunder. From 1652 he was organist at in Rendsburg.
