Ashford & Simpson were an American husband-and-wife songwriting-production team and recording duo of Nickolas Ashford (May 4, 1941 – August 22, 2011) and Valerie Simpson (born August 26, 1946). Ashford was born in Fairfield, South Carolina, and Simpson in the Bronx, New York City. Afterwards, his family relocated to Ypsilanti, Michigan, where he became a member of Christ Temple Baptist Church. Nellie Ashford (born 1943) is a self-taught folk artist from Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Her mixed-media folk art depicts the experiences of Charlotte’s African-American community from the Jim Crow era to contemporary day in the U.S. South. Early life and education Ashford grew up in a rural part of Mecklenburg County and attended school in a segregated four-room schoolhouse. ''Ashford v Thornton'' (1818) 106 ER 149 is an English criminal case in the Court of King's Bench which upheld the right of the defendant to trial by battle on a private appeal from an acquittal for murder. In 1817, Abraham Thornton was charged with the murder of Mary Ashford. Thornton had met Ashford at a dance and had walked with her from the event. The next morning, she was found drowned in a pit with little evidence of violence. Public opinion was heavily against Thornton, but the jury quickly acquitted him and found him not guilty of rape. Mary's brother William Ashford launched an appeal, and Thornton was rearrested. Thornton claimed the right to trial by battle, a medieval usage that had never been repealed by Parliament. Lindsay Ashford is a British crime novelist and journalist. Her style of writing has been compared to that of Vivien Armstrong, Linda Fairstein and Frances Fyfield. Many of her books follow the character of Megan Rhys, an investigative psychologist. Frederick Ashford
Frederick Murray Ashford (28 September 1886 – 29 September 1965) was an English athlete from Islington, London. He competed in the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. Ashford represented Great Britain in the 800 metres at the 1908 Summer Olympics, but did not finish his semifinal heat, so did not advance to the final. Previous to the Olympics, Ashford had been a finalist in the 880 yards, representing the Finchley Harriers at the 1908 AAA Championships. He later studied piano and organ at the Royal Academy of Music, developing into a tenor.
