Ashdod Light
Ashdod Light ( he, מגדלור אשדוד), is a lighthouse in Ashdod, Israel. It is located in Yona Hill ( he, גבעת יונה), a above sea level hill at the northern part Ashdod, just south of the Port of Ashdod. The site and the lighthouse are closed to the public. The lighthouse is listed as active on the NGA List of Lights of 2019, as well as on the April 2021 update of The Lighthouse Directory. However, some less official sources claim that it is inactive at least since November 2009. The lighthouse appeared on an Israeli stamp issued 26 November 2009. It also appeared on the first day of issue postmark for that series of stamps. History The lighthouse was built in 1966 as part of the construction of the port facilities. Port Of Ashdod
The Port of Ashdod ( he, נמל אשדוד) is one of Israel's three main cargo ports. The port is located in Ashdod, about 40 kilometers south of Tel Aviv, adjoining the mouth of the Lachish River. Its establishment significantly enhanced the country's port capacity. It handles the largest volume of cargo containers annually (1.525 million TEU in 2017) of all Israeli ports. Ships carrying humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip also unload their cargo at Ashdod. Jaffa Light
Jaffa Light ( he, מגדלור יפו) is a lighthouse in Jaffa, Tel Aviv, Israel. It is located on a hilltop above the old Jaffa Port, in the historical part of the city. It operated between 1865 and 1966, although now deactivated it is still used as a daylight navigation aid. History Jaffa Light was built by French engineers in 1865. It was constructed as part of operations carried out by the Ottoman authorities to improve the port facilities, mainly due to the increase in export of citrus fruit, and especially oranges, the well known "Jaffa oranges". The lighthouse keeper from 1875 was an Armenian who came from Jerusalem. He was trained by the same French company who built the lighthouse. Around 1938 his son was trained by the same French company and replaced him, probably as result of the lighthouse being rebuilt. Ilan Gilon (; 12 May 1956 – 1 May 2022) was an Israeli politician. He served as a member of the Knesset for the Meretz and the Democratic Union alliance in three spells between 1999 and 2021. Biography Born in Galați, Romania, the son of Abraham Goldstein, Gilon had polio at the age of seven months, leaving him with a leg disability. He made aliyah to Israel with his family at age nine, and grew up in Ashdod. Zvi Zilker (13 March 1933 – 18 November 2021) was an Israeli politician who served as the fourth and sixth mayor of Ashdod. Background Zilker was born in Güstrow, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, in March 1933, to a German Jewish family, and immigrated to Mandatory Palestine with his family in 1935 at age two. The lighthouses of Israel are all located along its coastline. Most of the Israel's coastline faces west on the Mediterranean Sea, with a short coastline at the southern tip of the country, on the Gulf of Aqaba.
