Ash, Braunton
Ash in the parish of Braunton in North Devon is a historic estate listed in the Domesday Book. The present mansion, known as The Ash Barton estate is a Grade II* listed building. History Descent Anglo-Saxons In AD 973 Edgar the Peaceful repossessed Braunton for the Crown through an exchange with Glastonbury Abbey, thus retrieving a strategically important estate at the head of a major estuary. Susan Pearce conjectures that the King then placed a number of his thegns here providing each with a landholding which became the small estates which form an arc around Braunton to the north and east. These appear to have been members of three manors within the parish of Braunton, later known as Braunton Dean, Braunton Abbot and Braunton Gorges, of which latter manor Ash was part. Duchy Of Cornwall
The Duchy of Cornwall ( kw, Duketh Kernow) is one of two royal duchies in England, the other being the Duchy of Lancaster. The eldest son of the reigning British monarch obtains possession of the duchy and the title of 'Duke of Cornwall' at birth or when his parent succeeds to the throne, but may not sell assets for personal benefit and has limited rights and income while a minor. The current duke is Prince William. When the monarch has no male children, the rights and responsibilities of the duchy revert to the Crown. The Duchy Council, called the Prince's Council, meets twice a year and is chaired by the duke. The Prince's Council is a non-executive body which provides advice to the duke with regard to the management of the duchy. Feudal Barony Of Launceston
Launceston was one of three Feudal baronies in Cornwall which existed in the mediaeval era. Its ''caput'' was at Launceston Castle. Descent *Robert, Count of Mortain (d.1090). The barony was granted by William the Conqueror to his half-brother Robert, Count of Mortain (d.1090). *William, Count of Mortain (son), who sided with Robert Curthose, Duke of Normandy against the latter's younger brother King Henry I of England, and was defeated at the Battle of Tinchebray in 1106 when his honours were forfeited to the crown. *Alan, 1st Earl of Richmond (d.1146), 4th feudal baron of Richmond, Yorkshire, to whom the barony was next granted in 1140 by King Stephen. Robert, Count of Mortain, 2nd Earl of Cornwall (–) was a Norman nobleman and the half-brother (on their mother's side) of King William the Conqueror. He was one of the very few proven companions of William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings and as recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 was one of the greatest landholders in his half-brother's new Kingdom of England. Erchenbald
Erchenbald or Archembald was a mesne lord listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as a tenant of nine manors in Devon and Cornwall, England. He is believed to be the first English ancestor of the prominent Fleming family.
