Asaram Tyagi
Major Asaram Tyagi, MVC was a hero of the Battle of Dograi in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. On the night of 21 September 1965, Major Asa Ram Tyagi personally led the leading platoon of a company of 3rd Jat Battalion of Indian Army to capture a Pakistani position in Dograi village in Pakistan, which was defended by a troop of tanks, covering pillboxes and recoilless guns. While assaulting the position, Major Tyagi was hit by two bullets in the right shoulder. In spite of his injury, he pressed on against the tanks, personally destroyed the crew with grenades and captured two tanks intact. In this process he was again hit by three more bullets, but still continued to lead his company until he fell unconscious. He was subsequently evacuated to a military hospital where he died. Greatly inspired by his conspicuous bravery, his men captured the objective. The Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 or the Second Kashmir War was a culmination of skirmishes that took place between April 1965 and September 1965 between Pakistan and India. The conflict began following Pakistan's Operation Gibraltar, which was designed to infiltrate forces into Jammu and Kashmir to precipitate an insurgency against Indian rule, It became the immediate cause of the war. The seventeen-day war caused thousands of casualties on both sides and witnessed the largest engagement of armored vehicles and the largest tank battle since World War II. Hostilities between the two countries ended after a ceasefire was declared through UNSC Resolution 211 following a diplomatic intervention by the Soviet Union and the United States, and the subsequent issuance of the Tashkent Declaration. Maha Vir Chakra
The Maha Vir Chakra (MVC) () is the second highest military decoration in India, after the Param Vir Chakra, and is awarded for acts of conspicuous gallantry in the presence of the enemy, whether on land, at sea or in the air. It replaced the British Distinguished Service Order (DSO). The medal may be awarded posthumously. Appearance The medal is made of standard silver and is circular in shape. Embossed on the obverse is a five pointed heraldic star with circular center-piece bearing the gilded state emblem of India in the center. The words "Mahavira Chakra" are embossed in Hindi and English on the reverse with two lotus flowers in the middle. The Battle of Dograi was a military engagement from 20 to 22 September 1965, during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. It took place in the area of Dograi village on the outskirts of Lahore in Pakistani Punjab. Background Dograi is a strategically important village as it is located just 49 km from Lahore, the capital of Pakistani Punjab and the 2nd largest city in Pakistan.
