Aruba ( , , ), officially the Country of Aruba ( nl, Land Aruba; pap, Pais Aruba) is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands physically located in the mid-south of the Caribbean Sea, about north of the Venezuela peninsula of Paraguaná and northwest of Curaçao. Prior to Aruba's independence, it was a supporter of a unified, independent Netherlands Antilles. In the 2001 Aruban general election, the party won 9.6% of the popular vote and 2 out of the 21 seats. In the 2005 Aruban general election, it won 2.1% of the vote and no seats. Its share of the vote fell to 1.1% in 2009 and 0.9% in 2013. In the 2017 Aruban general election, it rose to 1.1% of the vote while running in conjunction with the Patriotic Progressive Union. Elections In Aruba
Aruba elects a legislature on the national level. The Estates (''Staten'') have 21 members, elected for a four-year term by Open list Party-list proportional representation. Seats are distributed between parties that have gained at least one full quota (1/21, or approximately 4.76% of the vote) using the Hagenbach-Bischoff system (a variant of the D'Hondt method). 2009 Aruban General Election
General elections were held in Aruba on 25 September 2009. The elections were the seventh to be held for membership of the Estates since autonomy was granted by the Dutch in 1986, and resulted in a victory for the Aruban People's Party, which won 12 of the 21 seats in the Estates. Background Prior to this election the People's Electoral Movement (MEP) were the governing party, holding eleven seats. The main opposition Aruban People's Party (AVP) held eight with the Network of Electoral Democracy and the Aruban Patriotic Movement holding a seat apiece.
