Arthur Pickles
Arthur Pickles OBE JP (23 September 1901 – 3 April 1984) was a British architect and Liberal Party politician who was mayor of Halifax. Background Pickles was the eldest son of builder and stonemason Fred Pickles and Margaret Catterall, and the elder brother of Wilfred Pickles, the broadcaster. His grandfather worked on the construction of the Royal Courts of Justice on the Strand in London. He was educated at Parkinson Lane School, Halifax, and then won a scholarship to Rishworth School. In 1924 he married Gladys Crampton. They had one son, who became Judge James Pickles, and four daughters. One daughter, Christine, changed her name to Christina Pickles and became a well-known TV actress, appearing notably in the sitcom Friends and the medical drama St. Elsewhere. Warley Town
Warley Town is an area of Halifax in the county of West Yorkshire, England. Warley is a ward of Calderdale. The population of this ward as taken at the 2011 Census was 12,215. History Warley Town was listed in the Domesday book as ''Werlafeslei''. Warley township, one of 23 townships in the ancient parish of Halifax, was also one of the biggest, stretching as far as Luddenden and what was to become Sowerby Bridge. The township consisted of many tiny settlements essentially based on the local farmsteads, places such as Lane End, Warley Edge, Winterburn Hill, Cliff Hill and Warley itself. Warley remained a small settlement until the beginning of the 18th century. Dryden Brook
Sir Dryden Brook (25 August 1884 – 30 January 1971) was a Labour Party politician in the United Kingdom, and a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1945 to 1955. Brook was a wool merchant in Halifax. He served as a Labour Party member of Halifax Borough Council from 1940 until 1968. In the Labour landslide at the 1945 general election, Brook was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Halifax, unseating the Conservative MP Gilbert Gledhill with a majority of over 10,000 votes. 1950 United Kingdom General Election
The 1950 United Kingdom general election was the first ever to be held after a full term of Labour government. The election was held on Thursday 23 February 1950, and was the first held following the abolition of plural voting and university constituencies. The government's 1945 lead over the Conservative Party shrank dramatically, and Labour was returned to power but with an overall majority reduced from 146 to just 5. There was a 2.8% national swing towards the Conservatives, who gained 90 seats. Labour called another general election in 1951, which the Conservative Party won. Turnout increased to 83.9%, the highest turnout in a UK general election under universal suffrage, and representing an increase of more than 11% in comparison to 1945. James Pickles
James Pickles (18 March 1925 – 18 December 2010) was an English barrister and circuit judge and who later became a tabloid newspaper columnist. He became known for his controversial sentencing decisions and press statements. He suffered a severe burn to his right hand when young, and learned to write and play tennis and squash with his left hand. He was educated at local primary schools, a prep school and then at Worksop College in Nottinghamshire. His hand injury made him exempt from military service in the Second World War, and he read law at Leeds University and Christ Church, Oxford. He graduated in the second class in 1947 and was called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1948. He married Sheila Ratcliffe in August 1948. They had two sons, Roger and Simon Pickles, and daughter, Carolyn Pickles, who became an actress.
