Arthur Ford (journalist)
Arthur Ford (1886–1968) was editor-in-chief of ''The London Free Press'', of London, Ontario. He joined the ''Winnipeg Telegram'' in 1911 as the paper's parliamentary correspondent. The London Free Press
''The London Free Press'' is a daily newspaper based in London, Ontario, Canada. It has the largest circulation of any newspaper in Southwestern Ontario. History ''The London Free Press'' began as the ''Canadian Free Press'', founded by William Sutherland. It first began printing as a weekly newspaper on January 2, 1849. In 1852, it was purchased for $500 by Josiah Blackburn (and Stephen Blackburn), who renamed it ''The London Free Press and Daily Western Advertiser''. In 1855 Blackburn turned the weekly newspaper into a daily. From 1863 to 1936 ''The London Free Press'' competed for readership with the '' London Advertiser'', which was a daily evening newspaper. The ''Free Press'' has usually been a morning paper, but for many years, it also published an evening paper. Both morning and evening editions were published from the 1950s through to 1981, when the evening edition was permanently retired. London, Ontario
London (pronounced ) is a city in southwestern Ontario, Canada, along the Quebec City–Windsor Corridor. The city had a population of 422,324 according to the 2021 Canadian census. London is at the confluence of the Thames River, approximately from both Toronto and Detroit; and about from Buffalo, New York. The city of London is politically separate from Middlesex County, though it remains the county seat. London and the Thames were named in 1793 by John Graves Simcoe, who proposed the site for the capital city of Upper Canada. The first European settlement was between 1801 and 1804 by Peter Hagerman. The village was founded in 1826 and incorporated in 1855. Since then, London has grown to be the largest southwestern Ontario municipality and Canada's 11th largest metropolitan area, having annexed many of the smaller communities that surround it. Winnipeg Telegram
The ''Winnipeg Telegram'' was a daily newspaper in Winnipeg, Manitoba which was published from June 9, 1898, to October 16, 1920. The paper originated as the ''Daily Nor'Wester'', which was founded in 1894 by William Luxton who also founded the Winnipeg Free Press. Luxton sold the paper in 1896. From January 2, 1897, to June 8, 1898, a morning and evening edition were published. On June 9, the paper was renamed the ''Morning Telegram'' and was published every day except Sunday until August 21, 1907. It was subsequently renamed the ''Winnipeg Telegram''. Editors of the newspaper included: * William Sanford Evans (1901–1905) * Mark Nichols * Garnet Porter Evans purchased the newspaper in 1901 and continued as owner until 1920. Ottawa Journal
The ''Ottawa Journal'' was a daily broadsheet newspaper published in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, from 1885 to 1980. It was founded in 1885 by A. Woodburn as the ''Ottawa Evening Journal''. Its first editor was John Wesley Dafoe who came from the ''Winnipeg Free Press''. In 1886, it was bought by Philip Dansken Ross. The paper began publishing a morning edition in 1917. In 1919, the paper's publishers bought the ''Ottawa Free Press'', whose former owner, E. Norman Smith, then became editor with Grattan O'Leary. In 1959, it was bought by F.P. Publications. By then, the ''Journal'', whose readers tended to come from rural areas, was trailing the ''Ottawa Citizen'', its main competitor. The paper encountered labour problems in the 1970s and never really recovered. In 1980, it was bought by Thomson Newspapers and was closed on 27 August 1980.
