Arthur Duray (pilot)
Arthur Duray (9 February 1882 – 11 February 1954) was born in New York City of Belgian parents and later became a French citizen. An early aviator, he held Belgian license #3. He is probably best known today for breaking the land speed record on three separate occasions between July, 1903 and March, 1904. Driver George Stewart legally changed his name to Leon Duray in tribute to fellow driver Arthur Duray. 1928 French Grand Prix
The 1928 French Grand Prix (formally the XXII Grand Prix de l'A.C.F.) was a Grand Prix motor race held at Saint-Gaudens on 1 July 1928. The race was held over 10 laps of a 26.3 km course for a total distance of 263 km. This is the same circuit used for the Grand Prix du Comminges. The race was won by William Grover-Williams driving a Bugatti. Due to a lack of entries in 1926 and 1927 it was decided that the race should be held for sports cars. Four 10 lap heats were held to determine the starters of the final. The final was run as a handicap race of 10 laps, with handicaps determined by the heats. The eventual winner William Grover-Williams was the last to start, 32 minutes and 8 seconds after the first group of cars was released. Ariès
The Ariès was a French automobile manufactured by La Société des Automobile Ariès in Asnières-sur-Seine. The firm was founded in 1902 by Baron Charles Petiet. The decision to end production was taken in 1937. Around 20,000 vehicles were produced in total. The first cars were two- and four-cylinder vehicles built 20 chassis at a time in a large factory. These shaft-drive cars had a rather unusual double rear axle, while the engines were built by Aster. In 1907 the company made its own narrow-angle V4 engine. The engine had a single cast iron T-head monobloc on a light alloy crankcase. This contained four cylinders in a square layout with a narrow 15° vee angle. Delage was a French luxury automobile and racecar company founded in 1905 by Louis Delâge in Levallois-Perret near Paris; it was acquired by Delahaye in 1935 and ceased operation in 1953. Alcyon
The Alcyon was a French bicycle, automobile and motorcycle manufacturer between 1903 and 1954. Origins Alcyon originated from about 1890 when Edmond Gentil started the manufacture of bicycles in Neuilly, Seine. In 1902, this was complemented by motorcycle production and in 1906, the first cars were shown at the fair "Mondial de l'Automobile" in Paris, France. Also in 1906 it founded the professional Alcyon cycling team which was active until 1955, including winning the Tour de France 6 times. Compagnie Nationale Excelsior, more simply known as Excelsior, was a Belgian car manufacturer established by Arthus de Coninck in Brussels in 1903. The company first started to manufacture cars in 1904. The first models were powered by a two- or four-cylinder Aster engine. In 1907, however, the company made headlines with the Adex, powered by a six-cylinder side-valve engine with a capacity of nine litres. This car's chassis could be easily modified for Grand Prix racing. In 1912, the car took second place in the French Grand Prix, and when the Belgian Royal Family purchased an Excelsior, the advertising value proved considerable. A second version of the Adex came out in 1920, with a smaller 4767 cc, six-cylinder engine including an overhead camshaft.
