Art Gallery Of Algoma
The Art Gallery of Algoma (AGA) is an art museum in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. The museum occupies a facility, situated near the shoreline of St. Marys River. The museum was formally incorporated on 7 July 1975, and in 1980, moved to its present location near the St. Marys River. The Art Gallery of Algoma serves as the principal art museum for the Algoma District, and maintains a permanent collection of approximately 5,000 works from regional artists, and other Canadian artists. History In 1974, the arts community of Sault Ste. Marie formed an association with the aim to establish a permanent art museum in the city. The association was later formally incorporated as the Art Gallery of Algoma on 7 July 1975. Algoma District
Algoma District is a district and census division in Northeastern Ontario in the Canadian province of Ontario. The name was created by an American ethnologist, Henry Rowe Schoolcraft (1793-1864), who was appointed Indian agent to the Ojibwe in Sault Ste. Marie region in 1822. "Al" is derived from Algonquin, while "goma" is a variant of gomee, meaning lake or water. Algoma District has shoreline along Lake Superior and Lake Huron. It has an international border crossing to the American state of Michigan, at Sault Ste. Marie. Historically, it was known for its lumber and mining industries. The rugged scenery of the region has inspired works by Canadian artists, particularly the Group of Seven. Haydn Llewellyn Davies
Haydn Llewellyn Davies (11 November 1921 – 24 March 2008) was a Welsh-born Canadian artist known for his large constructivist sculptures which stand outside many public buildings across Canada. Davies was born on 11 November 1921 in Rhymney, Wales, his father was called Emrys and his mother was called Rosina, her maiden name being Gallop. The Davies family emigrated to Canada when he was around nine years old. He studied art at the Central Technical School from where he graduated in 1939. In the Second World War he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served overseas from 1941 -1945 with Bomber Command, attaining the rank of sergeant and being mentioned in despatches. While serving in the RCAF Davies designed a poster which is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Andrew Dutkewych (born 1944, Vienna) is a Canadian contemporary artist known for his sculptural works. Life Dutkewych was born in Vienna in 1944. In 1966 he received a Bachelor of Arts from Philadelphia College of Art (1966) as well as a degree from the Slade School of Fine Art in London. Dutkewych is a professor of sculpture at Concordia University in Montreal. Work Dutkewych works mainly in the areas of drawing, sculpture and public art. Public art Dutkewych's 1977 work ''Cascade III'' is in the collection of the Gananoque Sculpture Park.
