Art Directors Club Hall Of Fame
The Art Directors Club Hall of Fame was established in 1971, by the Art Directors Club of New York, a professional organization in the design and creative industries. The Art Directors Club selects its honorees from those "who have made significant contributions to art direction and visual communications, and whose lifetime achievements represent the highest standards of creative excellence." In addition to designers usually notable within the communities of design and advertising, the honorees include more popular artists who have affected the broader field of visual culture, including, for example, Issey Miyake, Jim Henson and Andy Warhol. On its website, the Art Directors Club maintains a biography of each of the Hall of Fame honorees. In a video shown at the 2010 Hall of Fame gala, George Lois speaks a little bit about the award and its history. The Art Directors Club of New York is an organization for art directors in New York City. It was founded in 1920, and has grown as an industry group, promoting art directors' work through exhibitions and awards, including the annual DESI award for design excellence. History The Art Directors Club of New York (sometimes referred to as the "ADC") was founded in 1920 by Louis Pedlar and Earnest Elmo Calkins. With Fred Lamb, Calkins had organized the first advertising art exhibits in New York City in 1908, and saw a need for an organization that would “dignify the field of business art in the eyes of artists”, emphasizing his belief that “artistic excellence is vitally necessary to successful advertising”. Philip Hays
Philip Harrison "Phil" Hays (1931–2005) was an American illustrator. Born in Sherman, Texas on March 14, 1931, Hays grew up in Louisiana, served in the Air Force and in 1952 enrolled at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. After graduating in 1955, Hays moved to New York. Almost overnight he became a top illustrator creating romantic illustrations for magazines like ''Seventeen'', ''Cosmopolitan'', ''Redbook'' and ''McCalls''. In 1957 Silas Rhodes invited him to teach at the young School of Visual Arts, and Hays did, soon becoming head of the illustration program. Janet Froelich
Janet Froelich (born 1946, New York, NY) is an American graphic designer and creative director. Biography Janet Froelich received her undergraduate degree from Cooper Union and an MFA from Yale University. She was a designer of '' Heresies'', a feminist journal that was produced from 1977 to 1993 by the New York-based Heresies Collective. Froelich was featured in ''The Heretics'', a film that examines the inside story of the "second wave" of the Women's Movement. John Maeda (born 1966) is a Vice President of Design and Artificial Intelligence at Microsoft. He is an American technologist and designer whose work explores where business, design, and technology merge to make space for the "humanist technologist." Alex Bogusky is a designer, marketer, author, and consumer advocate; and was an advertising executive and principal of the firm Crispin Porter + Bogusky. Bogusky left CP+B in 2010. In July 2010, he retired from the advertising industry. Dan Gordon Wieden (; March 6, 1945 – September 30, 2022) was an American advertising executive who co-founded ad firm Wieden+Kennedy. A native of Oregon, he coined the Nike tagline " Just Do It."
