Arlanza River
The Arlanza River rises in the Sierra de la Demanda, near Quintanar de la Sierra in an area known as Fuente Sanza. As it flows through the province of Burgos, Spain, it passes through the municipalities of Castrovido, Salas de los Infantes, Covarrubias and Lerma, broadly east to west roughly parallel to and north of the River Duero. Its main tributary is the River Arlanzón that joins near Quintana del Puente shortly before the Arlanza itself joins River Pisuerga The Pisuerga is a river in northern Spain, the Duero's second largest tributary. Arlanza (DO)
Arlanza is a Spanish Denominación de Origen Protegida (DOP) located in the provinces of Burgos and Palencia, Castile and León, Spain. It was officially upgraded from the lower status of QWPSR (''VCPRD'' in Spanish) in 2007. The DOP covers 67 municipalities (54 in the province of Burgos and 13 in the province of Palencia). There are 23 wineries (''bodegas'') from Burgos registered and 2 from Palencia. The DOP takes its name from the river Arlanza which flows through it. History The first written evidence of wine production in this area comes from the 12th century, when the monastery of Santa María de Bujedo de Juarros ( es) purchased vineyards on the banks of the rivers Arlanza and Duero. When the phylloxera virus devastated the vineyards of Europe at the end of the 19th century, almost all the vineyards in this area were uprooted and replanted by grafting onto American rootstock. The River Arlanzón is a river in northern Spain. Its source is in the Sierra de la Demanda in the Province of Burgos. It is a tributary of the River Arlanza, joining the latter river at Quintana del Puente in the Province of Palencia. The Douro (, , ; es, Duero ; la, Durius) is the highest-flow river of the Iberian Peninsula. It rises near Duruelo de la Sierra in Soria Province, central Spain, meanders south briefly then flows generally west through the north-west part of central Spain and into northern Portugal, to its mouth at Porto, the second largest city of Portugal. Lerma, Burgos
Lerma is a village in the province of Burgos, part of the autonomous community of Castile and León, Spain. It has important monuments dating from the 17th century, which were built by the Duke of Lerma. The village is home to the headquarters of the Spanish wine ''denominación de origen protegida'' Arlanza DOP. History The town of Lerma dates back to at least as far as the Iron Age, when the Celtiberian tribe of the ''vacceos'' lived in the area. The town was formed in a strategic position on a hill overlooking the Arlanza River. The area was then conquered in turn by the Romans, the Visigoths, and the Berbers, and in the 10th century was conquered by the Christians during the Reconquista when the Arlanza River became the border. Covarrubias, Province Of Burgos
Covarrubias is a village and municipality in the province of Burgos in the Spanish autonomous community of Castile and León. It has 640 inhabitants, and it is near to Mecerreyes, Cubillo del Campo and Hortigüela. Covarrubias is situated in the valley of the river Arlanza, which is extensively wooded with among other species Spanish Juniper. Part of the area belonging to the municipality is included within a Special Protection Area for bird-life such as vultures. The village itself was declared a ''Conjunto Histórico-Artístico'', a type of conservation area, in 1965.
