Arksey railway station, originally named Stockbridge and later Arksey and Stockbridge was a station which served the villages of Arksey and Stockbridge in the English county of South Yorkshire. It was served by trains on the main line between Doncaster and York. History The station was opened by the Great Northern Railway and became part of the London and North Eastern Railway during the Grouping of 1923, passing on to the Eastern Region of British Railways during the nationalisation of 1948. It was then closed by British Railways on 5 August 1952. Arksey
Arksey is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England. It had an estimated population of 1,303 as of 2010. It was the birthplace of the children's writer Barbara Euphan Todd on 9 January 1890. Arksey has four satellite hamlets: Shaftholme, Tilts, Almholme and Stockbridge. The ''sey'' in ''Arksey'' means ''island'' in Old English, which is appropriate as the village is surrounded by marshland. Arksey is older than the Domesday Book. Askern Branch Line
The Askern branch line is a railway line which runs in North, South and West Yorkshire in England. The stretch of track runs from Shaftholme Junction north of Doncaster (on the East Coast Main Line between Doncaster and York), via Askern, Norton and Womersley to Knottingley, where it joins the Pontefract Line. History It was opened by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway on 6 June 1848 and running powers were granted to the Great Northern Railway (with which it made an end-on junction at Askern) giving the latter company its initial access to Leeds (using part of the current Pontefract Line) and the former to Doncaster. Askern railway station was a station on the Askern branch line of the former Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway between Doncaster and Knottingley. It served the small mining village of Askern in South Yorkshire, England. History The branch line of the Wakefield, Pontefract and Goole Railway (WP&GR) between (on the WP&GR) and Askern Junction (on the London and York Railway, a predecessor of the Great Northern Railway) was authorised on 16 July 1846. Joan Croft Halt Railway Station
Joan Croft Halt railway station was a small halt on the East Coast Main Line (ECML) situated by a level crossing at Joan Croft Junction in South Yorkshire, England. The junction gives access from the ECML to the Skellow line of the West Riding and Grimsby Railway and eventually to Hull, Immingham and Grimsby Docks. History The halt consisted of two flanking platforms to the south of the level crossing, with brick-built station buildings on the York-bound(Down)side. These buildings still stand in private use. The station was set in the countryside, with just a few cottages situated either side at some distance.
