The Treasurer of Arkansas acts as the head banker for the State of Arkansas, handling deposits, withdrawals, redemptions of state warrants, and investments of state funds. The position was created in 1819 when Arkansas became a Territory (country subdivision), territory. Mark Dale Lowery (born March 28, 1957) is an American politician. He serves as a Republican member for the 39th district of the Arkansas House of Representatives. Lowery has a Master's degree from the University of Arkansas. In 2013, Lowery was elected for the 39th district of the Arkansas House of Representatives. He assumed office on January 14, 2013. Arkansas ( ) is a landlocked state in the South Central United States. It is bordered by Missouri to the north, Tennessee and Mississippi to the east, Louisiana to the south, and Texas and Oklahoma to the west. Samuel Adams (June 5, 1805 – February 27, 1850) was an American politician who served as acting governor of Arkansas from April to November 1844. Early life Adams was born in Halifax County, Virginia. He moved to Arkansas in 1835, where he became a planter and was active in state politics. Political career Adams was a Democrat, and was elected to the Arkansas Senate in 1840. He was reelected and served as president of the Senate during his second term. On April 29, 1844, Governor Archibald Yell resigned from his office to run for the U.S. House of Representatives. Adams, who was president of the Arkansas Senate at that time, became Acting Governor of Arkansas and served until November 5, 1844. During his short term he focused on internal improvements and education, and left a surplus in the state treasury when he left office. Thomas James Churchill (March 10, 1824 – May 14, 1905) was an American politician who served as the 13th governor of Arkansas from 1881 to 1883. Prior to that, he was a senior officer of the Confederate States Army who commanded infantry in the Western and Trans-Mississippi theaters of the American Civil War. Early life and education Thomas James Churchill was born near Louisville, Kentucky. He graduated from St. Mary's College in Bardstown in 1844, then studied law at Transylvania University in Lexington. He served during the Mexican War, rising to the rank of first lieutenant in the 1st Kentucky Cavalry Regiment. He was captured by the Mexicans and remained a prisoner of war until near the end of that conflict. Nancy Pearl Johnson Hall (October 5, 1904 – January 1, 1991) was the first female Arkansas State Treasurer, serving as a Democrat from 1963 to 1981. Prior to becoming Treasurer, Hall was appointed Secretary of State of Arkansas by Governor Orval Faubus in 1961, after the death of her husband, Crip Hall. Gus Wingfield (born September 17, 1926) is a former one-term Arkansas State Treasurer, and two-term Arkansas State Auditor, 1994–2003. He served as treasurer from 2003 to 2007. Early life Wingfield was born in Antoine, Arkansas and went to a public school in the nearby town of Delight, Arkansas. He served in the Air Force, and is a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. Martha Shoffner is the former state treasurer of Arkansas. A Democrat, she was first elected in 2006, taking office in January 2007. She was re-elected in 2010.
