Arkansas Southern Railroad
The Arkansas Southern Railroad is a short-line railroad which started service in October 2005. ARS operates two disconnected lines consisting of Heavener, Oklahoma to Waldron, Arkansas (32 miles), and Ashdown to Nashville, Arkansas (29 miles), plus a switch track at Ashdown, for a total of 63 miles. The lines are leased from Kansas City Southern Railway (KCS) to ARS's owner, the Watco Companies (Watco). History The Ashdown to Nashville trackage (now known as the Southern Branch), which also serves Saratoga, Tollette, and Mineral Springs, Arkansas, started in 1907 as the Memphis, Paris & Gulf Railroad, later reorganized as the Graysonia, Nashville & Ashdown Railroad. By mid-century, 75% of its business came from hauling cement and quarry rock. After the line was relocated in the 1960's to make room for a dam project, it was purchased in 1998 by KCS. Arkansas Western Railway
The Arkansas Western Railway operated a 32-mile rail line between Heavener, Oklahoma and Waldron, Arkansas. It bought the assets of its predecessor in 1904, and the company was merged out of existence in 1992. History About three years after the Kansas City, Pittsburg & Gulf Railroad (KCP&G) arrived in Heavener in what was then Indian Territory, the Arkansas Western Railroad was incorporated December 13, 1899 to build a line from Heavener to Waldron in Arkansas. The line was about 32 miles in length, passed through Bates, Cauthron, and Hon, Arkansas, and was completed in 1901. The purpose of the railway was to service the timber industry. The Kansas City Southern (KCS) acquired the KCP&G in a foreclosure sale in 1900. On May 13, 1904 the KCS incorporated a new subsidiary, the Arkansas Western Railway, which then acquired all the assets of the Arkansas Western Railroad on June 1, 1904. Graysonia, Nashville & Ashdown Railroad
The Graysonia, Nashville & Ashdown Railroad was a shortline rail carrier in the state of Arkansas, with rails running from Nashville, Arkansas to Ashdown, Arkansas. It operated from 1922 to 1998. History The trackage can be traced to the Memphis, Paris and Gulf Railroad, incorporated in 1906. That line's original vision was to link Nashville, Arkansas to Memphis, Tennessee and Paris, Texas. The name changed in 1910 to the Memphis, Dallas and Gulf Railway. The railroad constructed a line from Ashland, Arkansas to Shawmut, Arkansas, about 61 miles. When the railroad went into foreclosure in 1922, the Graysonia, Nashville & Ashdown was incorporated to purchase the entire Ashland-to-Shawmut route. However, 19 miles were abandoned, and the 15-mile segment from Nashville to Murfreesboro ended up with the new Murfreesboro, Nashville, Southwestern Railway, which ran it until the that line too was abandoned in 1952.
