The route of runs from Highway 56 in Calico Rock north across US Route 62/ US Route 412 (US 62/US 412) to Missouri Supplemental Route E (SSR-E) at the Missouri state line. Route description AR 223 begins in Calico Rock at Highway 56. The route runs north to meet the southern terminus of Highway 177 in Pineville. The route continues north to meet US 62/US 412 in Viola in Fulton County, after which it continues north to the Missouri state line where the route extends as Missouri supplemental route E. The following is a list of state highways in Arkansas. The state does not use a numbering convention. Generally the two-digit odd numbered highways run north–south with a few exceptions; and even-numbered two-digit state highways run east–west with a few exceptions. Arkansas has long had a stigma of poor roads, dating from the "Arkansas Roads Scandal" playing a prominent role in state politics through the 1920s and 1930s, periodic allegations of corruption, waste, and fraud, and a long-running struggle to adequately fund the operation, maintenance and expansion of a large highway system serving a rural state. Arkansas Highway 56 (AR 56 and Hwy. 56) is an east–west state highway in Sharp and Izard Counties. The route runs from Arkansas Highway 5 in Calico Rock east and south to Poughkeepsie. Route description AR 56 begins in Calico Rock at Arkansas Highway 5, running north to Pineville. In Pineville, AR 56 serves as the southern terminus for AR 223, which runs north to Missouri. The route continues to run east through rural country to meet AR 9 in Brockwell near the historic Pine Ridge School Building and AR 289 in Franklin south of Horseshoe Bend. After Franklin, the route enters Sharp County, and a concurrency begins south with US 167 south of Ash Flat. AR 56 follows US 167 south for until Evening Shade, when AR 56 turns east. Highway 177 (AR 177, Ark. 177, and Hwy. 177) is a north–south state highway that runs in north central Arkansas. The route runs from Herron north over the Norfork Dam, then south to Pineville. Route description AR 177 begins in Herron and heads north to meet AR 5 in Norfork. It concurs with AR 5 north until Salesville. North of Salesville, AR 177 serves the Norfork National Fish Hatchery, the Quarry Cove Use Area, and bridges the Norfork Dam.
