Arkadia Jazz
Arkadia Records is an independent record label that was founded in 1996. The label was founded in New York City by Bob Karcy, who had been a manager for musicians and an independent record producer. The first release was Billy Taylor's ''Music Keeps Us Young'', in 1997. From the first releases, the session leaders were allowed to select the other musicians and the material. Writers of early liner notes included Stanley Crouch, Ira Gitler, and Nat Hentoff. Arkadia acquired the catalog of Postcards Records in 1999. The original label was Arkadia Jazz, on which 20 albums had been released by early 2000. The sub-label Arkadia Chansons is used for licensed re-releases of French recordings by performers such as Josephine Baker and Edith Piaf. By 2022, Arkadia had released more than 100 albums. This included sessions led by Joanne Brackeen, Benny Golson, Dave Liebman, and T. K. Blue. Several releases have been by the Arkadia Jazz Allstars. These led to three Grammy Award nominations for ...

Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in European harmony and African rhythmic rituals. As jazz spread around the world, it drew on national, regional, and local musical cultures, which gave rise to different styles. New Orleans jazz began in the early 1910s, combining earlier brass band marches, French quadrilles, biguine, ragtime and blues with collective polyphonic improvisation.
