Arizona Open
The Arizona Open Championship is the annual open state championship of golf in Arizona. The competition is 54-holes of stroke play (3 rounds on an 18-hole course), with the winner being the player with the lowest total number of strokes. Following 36-holes of play the field is cut to the top 50 players and ties for the final round. In the event of a tie following 54-holes, a hole-by-hole, sudden death playoff will determine the winner. The Championship is administered by the Southwest PGA (Professional Golfers' Association of America). The Arizona Open has roots dating back to the inaugural event held in 1937. This historical championship has been held annually since 1953 and boasts an impressive list of past champions including Johnny Bulla, Dale Douglas and Curt Byrum. Philip Francis (golfer)
Philip C. Francis is an American professional golfer. Francis was born in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was one of the top-ranked junior golfers in the class of 2007, winning more than 140 junior events, to include the 2006 U.S. Junior Amateur. He was ranked number one in junior golf for 65 straight weeks. Francis first picked up a golf club at 18 months old and won for the first time at age four in an eight and under event. He also broke Tiger Woods' record by winning four consecutive Junior World Golf Championships (1999-2002). Francis played in the 2007 Stanford St. Jude Championship, John Deere Classic, and U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee, all on the PGA Tour, but failed to make the cut. Oro Valley Country Club
Oro Valley Country Club is a private country club in Oro Valley, Arizona, a suburb located 6 miles (9.7 km) north of Tucson. The club was founded in 1959 and designed by Robert Bruce Harris. Oro Valley Country Club is situated on the banks of the Cañada del Oro, at the base of Pusch Ridge in the Santa Catalina Mountains. Fred Marti
Fred Walter Marti (born November 15, 1940) is an American professional golfer. Marti was born in Houston, Texas. He played college golf at the University of Houston with Homero Blancas, Dick Crawford, Babe Hiskey, Rocky Thompson, and Kermit Zarley. He was a member of the 1962 team that went undefeated and won the NCAA Division I Championship. Marti turned professional in 1964. He played the PGA Tour from 1964 to 1980. His best finishes were a trio of second places: 2nd at the 1971 Kaiser International Open Invitational, 2nd at the 1972 Colonial National Invitation, and 2nd at the 1978 Ed McMahon-Jaycees Quad Cities Open. His best finish in a major was a T-9 at the 1971 PGA Championship. Paul Purtzer
Thomas Warren Purtzer (born December 5, 1951) is an American professional golfer who has won tournaments on both the PGA Tour and the Champions Tour. Purtzer was born in Des Moines, Iowa. He attended Arizona State University in Tempe, where he was a member of the school's golf team. He graduated in 1973 and turned pro. He followed in the footsteps of his older brother, Paul, who also played golf for Arizona State and played on the PGA Tour in the 1970s and early 1980s. Purtzer is often described in golf literature as having the "sweetest swing in golf". He won five tournaments on the PGA Tour in three different decades, and won four times on the Champions Tour. Bill Garrett (golfer)
William Frank Garrett (September 6, 1940 – February 25, 2010) was an American professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour in the 1960s and 1970s. Garrett was born in Amarillo, Texas. He graduated from North Texas State University in 1962. He turned professional in 1964. Garrett was a member of the PGA Tour from 1964–1979; he earned a living as a senior club professional after his days as a touring professional were over. Garrett won the 1970 Coral Springs Open Invitational by one stroke over Bob Murphy. His best finish in a major was a T-47 at the 1975 British Open. As a senior golfer, Garrett played in the PGA Senior Club Professional Championship several times finishing third in 1993, second in 1994 and T-3 in 1995. Mike Morley
Mike Morley (born June 17, 1946) is an American golf course architect and a former professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour for 14 years. Early life Born in Morris, Minnesota, Morley was raised there and in Minot, North Dakota, where his family later moved during his youth. He graduated from high school in La Jolla, California, in 1964 and then attended Arizona State University in Tempe and was a two-time first-team All-American on the Sun Devil golf team in 1967 and 1968. Professional career Morley won a handful of tournaments as a professional, including the satellite 1972 Magnolia State Classic, and the 1977 Ed McMahon-Jaycees Quad Cities Open; both events were opposite major championships. Larry Silveira
Larry Silveira (born October 12, 1965) is an American professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour and the Nationwide Tour. Amateur career Silveira was originally a baseball player and played catcher for Antioch High School along with former Major League Baseball pitchers Alex Sanchez and Jeff Pico. Silveira started his college golf career at San Jose State University where he won the Pacific Coast Athletic Association (now the Big West Conference) Conference Championship as a freshman. He then transferred to the University of Arizona where he was named a First Team All American in 1987 and 1988. Ronald Jay Black (born May 26, 1958) is an American professional golfer who has played on the PGA Tour, Nationwide Tour and Champions Tour. Black was born in Lovington, New Mexico. He attended Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, where he was a member of the golf team. He turned pro in 1981. Black won two events on the PGA Tour during his career both in the mid-1980s. Rick Cramer
Rick Cramer (born July 19, 1960) is an American professional golfer. Cramer was born in Independence, Kansas. He played college golf at the University of Colorado where he was a three-time All-American. Cramer played on the Nationwide Tour in 1990 and from 1996 to 2001. He won once, at the 1996 Nike Wichita Open, and scored a double eagle at the 1996 Nike Shreveport Open. He played on the PGA Tour in 1986 where his best finish was T-37 at the 1986 Buick Open.
