Aripuana River
''Aripuana'' is a plant genus in the gentian family, tribe Helieae, subclade ''Symbolanthus''. The genus is named after the Aripuanã River in central Brazil, where it is found. Only one species, ''Aripuana cullmaniorum'', has been classified as part of this genus. It is named for Lewis B. Cullman and Dorothy Cullman, philanthropists and supporters of the New York Botanical Garden. It is found in the southeastern part of Amazonas state, in a small area near the village of Nova Aripuanã Prainha along the Aripuanã River. Paulus Johannes Maria "Paul" Maas (born 27 February 1939, in Arnhem) is a botanist from the Netherlands and a specialist in the flora of the neotropics. Gentianaceae is a family of flowering plants of 103 genera and about 1600 species. Etymology The family takes its name from the genus '' Gentiana'', named after the Illyrian king Gentius. Distribution Distribution is cosmopolitan. Characteristics The family consists of trees, shrubs and herbs showing a wide range of colours and floral patterns. Flowers are actinomorphic and bisexual with fused sepals and petals. The stamens are attached to the inside of the petals ( epipetalous) and alternate with the corolla lobes. Aripuanã River
Aripuanã River ( pt, Rio Aripuanã) is a river in the Mato Grosso and Amazonas states in north-western Brazil. It is a tributary of the Madeira River in the Amazon Basin. The town of Novo Aripuanã is located on its banks where it merges into the Madeira River. The town of Aripuanã is also on its banks, but on the upper (southern) section of the river. The Aripuanã is a clearwater river. Course In Mato Grosso to the south of the border with Amazonas the river defines the western boundary of the Igarapés do Juruena State Park, created in 2002.
