Arend (locomotive)
''De Arend'' (; ''the eagle'') was one of the two first steam locomotives in the Netherlands. It was a 2-2-2 ''Patentee'' type built in England by R. B. Longridge and Company of Bedlington, Northumberland to run on the then standard Dutch track gauge of . On 20 September 1839, together with the ''Snelheid'' (Dutch for ''speed''), it hauled the first train of the Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij between Amsterdam and Haarlem. It was withdrawn in 1857. In 1939 a replica of the ''De Arend'' was constructed for the 100th anniversary of the Dutch railways. It is displayed at the Nederlands Spoorwegmuseum (Dutch Railway Museum) in Utrecht. Arendsee (lake)
The Lake Arend is a natural lake in the Altmark region, northern Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It is 23.3 m above sea level, and its area is 5.14 km², its depth nearly 50 m. It is the largest and deepest natural lake in Saxony-Anhalt. Comet Arend or 50P/Arend is a periodic comet in the Solar System which was discovered on October 4, 1951. It was discovered by astronomer Sylvain Julien Victor Arend at the Royal Observatory of Belgium located in the municipality of Uccle. The comet was illustrated at approximately a magnitude of 14 and also exhibited a nucleus within a coma 14 arc seconds across. From its discovery, the comet has had 7 perihelions with its last return of Earth recorded on November 1, 2007. The comet's next perihelion will be in the year 2016. Observations 50P/Arend was observed at its brightest at a maximum magnitude of 14 when it was discovered in 1951. At the comet's next apparition on September 1, 1959, did not exceed 17 if it had not been for an outburst in November which affected its brightness to magnitude 15.5.
