Aremberg Castle
Aremberg Castle (german: Burg Aremberg) is a ruined mediaeval hill castle on the Aremberg in the Ahr Hills in the Eifel region in Germany. The ruins lie near Aremberg in the county of Ahrweiler in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Location The castle ruins lie on the thickly wooded mountain of Aremberg (,) one of the largest Tertiary volcanoes in the Eifel, in the vicinity of the settlement of Aremberg. The village itself is on the western mountainside, below the summit dome. Castle site The castle is first mentioned in 1166, then under the name of ''Arberg''. In the 12th century, a castle was built on the mountain because it was a good strategic location. Aremberg Castle was the heart of the eponymous, imperially immediate Barony of Arenberg, whose family still flourishes today in Belgium and South America and has a large fortune. The Aremberg is, at , the highest mountain in the Ahr Hills (german: Ahrgebirge) or Ahr Eifel (''Ahreifel''). It lies in the district of Ahrweiler, Rhineland-Palatinate (Germany). Geographic location This former Tertiary volcano rises in the northwestern part of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, around east of its border with North Rhine-Westphalia and belongs to the volcanic region of the High Eifel. On its southwestern slopes lies the village of Aremberg and, at its southeastern foot, the village of Antweiler. The basalt cone is surrounded by the small nature reserve of Aremberg. A section of the middle reaches of the River Ahr flows past the Aremberg to the east; to the north an Ahr tributary, the Eichenbach, flows around the mountain. Ahrweiler (district)
Ahrweiler () is a district in the north of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is bounded by (from the north and clockwise) the districts of Euskirchen, Rhein-Sieg and the city of Bonn in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and the districts of Neuwied, Mayen-Koblenz and Vulkaneifel. History The region was conquered by the Romans under Julius Caesar about 50 BC. Some hundred years later the Roman fort of Rigomagus (Gaulish for "king's field") was founded, later to become the city of Remagen. The Vinxtbach, a narrow brook and an affluent of the Rhine, was defined as the borderline between the Roman provinces of Germania superior and Germania inferior. There was originally a Roman villa here; the German suffix, "weiler", is from the Latin term "villare", meaning "land attached to a Roman villa, farm".
