Area Codes In The United States
The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) divides the territories of its members into geographic numbering plan areas (NPAs). Each NPA is identified by one or more numbering plan area codes (''NPA codes'', or '' area codes''), consisting of three digits that are prefixed to each local telephone number having seven digits. Numbering plan areas may be assigned multiple area codes to provide adequate numbering resources, in which case the local numbering plan is called an overlay. Area codes are also assigned for non-geographic purposes. The rules for numbering NPAs do not permit the digits ''0'' and ''1'' as the leading digit, which also applies for central office codes.AT&T (1955) ''Notes on Distance Dialing'' NPAs with ''9'' as the second digit are reserved for future format expansion. Area codes with two identical trailing digits are considered easily recognizable codes (ERC), which are reserved, or used for systemwide services. Area codes in numerical order 200–299 300–399 ...

NANP Countries
The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) is a telephone numbering plan for twenty-five regions in twenty countries, primarily in North America and the Caribbean. This group is historically known as World Zone 1 and has the international calling code ''1''. Some North American countries, most notably Mexico, do not participate in the NANP. The NANP was originally devised in the 1940s by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) for the Bell System and the independent telephone operators in North America. The goal was to unify the diverse local numbering plans that had been established in the preceding decades and prepare the continent for direct-dialing of calls by customers without the involvement of telephone operators. AT&T continued to administer the numbering plan until the breakup of the Bell System, when administration was delegated to the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA), a service that has been procured from the private sector by the Federal ...

Area Code 860
Area is the quantity that expresses the extent of a region on the plane or on a curved surface. The area of a plane region or ''plane area'' refers to the area of a shape or planar lamina, while ''surface area'' refers to the area of an open surface or the boundary of a three-dimensional object. Area can be understood as the amount of material with a given thickness that would be necessary to fashion a model of the shape, or the amount of paint necessary to cover the surface with a single coat. It is the two-dimensional analogue of the length of a curve (a one-dimensional concept) or the volume of a solid (a three-dimensional concept). The area of a shape can be measured by comparing the shape to squares of a fixed size. In the International System of Units (SI), the standard unit of area is the square metre (written as m2), which is the area of a square whose sides are one metre long. A shape with an area of three square metres would have the same area as three such squares. ...

Area Code 206
Area code 206 is a North American telephone area code in the U.S. state of Washington serving Seattle and most of its innermost suburbs. The numbering plan area (NPA) includes such suburbs as Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, the islands of Mercer, Bainbridge, and Vashon, and portions of metropolitan Seattle from Des Moines to Woodway. As of January 2017, 206 was one of the last urbanized numbering plan areas in the North American Numbering Plan without an overlay area code, making Seattle one of the largest cities where calls could still be originated by seven-digit dialing. On January 28, 2017, area code 564 was activated as an overlay for most of the western portion of Washington, and ten-digit dialing became mandatory on July 29, 2017. History Area code 206 was one of the original area codes assigned in 1947, and originally covered the entire state of Washington. On January 1, 1957, area code 509 was assigned for the eastern two-thirds of Washington in a flash-cut, with the s ...

Area Code 256
Area codes 256 and 938 are telephone numbering plan codes that mostly cover North Alabama as well as some eastern portions of the state. The main area code, 256, was created on March 23, 1998, as a split from area code 205. In order to allow people time to reprogram electronics such as computers, cell phones, pagers and fax machines, use of the 205 area code continued in the 256 areas through September 28, 1998. It covers north and northeast Alabama and includes the following metropolitan areas: * Huntsville Metropolitan Area * Decatur Metropolitan Area * The Shoals * Gadsden Metropolitan Statistical Area * Anniston-Oxford Metropolitan Area In March 2009, the Alabama Public Service Commission announced that the state's first all-services overlay area code, 938, would be added with the current 256 area code "sometime in 2011". As a result, 10-digit dialing was implemented for all numbers in the area with voluntary compliance beginning on November 7, 2009, and mandatory use by J ...

Area Code 334
Area code 334 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for southeastern Alabama. It was created on January 15, 1995, in an area code split from area code 205. and was the first new area code in Alabama since the implementation of area codes in 1947. To permit a transition period for the reconfiguration of equipment, such as computers and fax machines, use of area code 205 continued in the 334 region through May 13, 1995. The numbering plan area (NPA) comprises the Montgomery, Auburn-Opelika, and Dothan metropolitan areas, as well as Phenix City and the Alabama side of the Columbus, Georgia metro area. The original 334 territory included the southern half of Alabama. Area code 251 was subsequently split from 334 in 2001 for southwest Alabama, including Mobile. Area code 334 was the first interchangeable NPA code, not having the middle digit as ''0'' or ''1'', officially preceding Washington area code 360 by one minute. Exhaustion projections in 20 ...

Area Code 205
Area codes 205 and 659 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the western and central parts of the U.S. State of Alabama, including the cities of Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. Area code 205 was one of the original area codes created in 1947 when the NANP was placed in operation by AT&T. It encompassed the entire state, making Alabama one of 34 states served by a single numbering plan area. By the 1990s, 205 was on the brink of exhaustion due to the state's growth and the proliferation of cell phones and pagers. In 1995, area code 334 was created to serve the area from Montgomery southward. The numbering plan area was reduced in size in 1998, when the northern and eastern portions were assigned area code 256. In October 2019, area code 659 was created as an overlay plan for the region served by 205. This change mandated ten-digit dialing for all calls. Service area Counties: *Bibb (most; part of Bibb County is in area code 334) * Blount * Chilton ...

Area Code 584
Area codes 204, 431, and 584 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the entire Canadian province of Manitoba. Area code 204 is one of the original North American area codes assigned in 1947, and 431 and 584 are area codes that overlay the entire numbering plan area (NPA). The incumbent local exchange carrier for the area codes is Bell MTS. In 2009, the Canadian Numbering Administrator forecast that area code 204 would be exhausted within a few years even though there are only 1.2 million people in the entire province. An area code provides about 7.8 million telephone numbers, Canada uses an allocation scheme that allots all 10,000+ numbers of a central office prefix to competitive local exchange carriers even for the smallest hamlets. Canada does not implement number pooling. Therefore, once a number is allocated to a rate centre, it cannot be reassigned elsewhere even if a rate centre has more than enough numbers to service it. The number exhaus ...
