Archiva Vol. 2
''Archiva'' is a two-volume collection of out-takes and previously unreleased tracks by British progressive rock band Asia. The volume two, designated as ''Archiva 2'', was released on 17 September 1996 by Resurgence. Background In late 1995, Asia had completed work on their sixth studio album, '' Arena''. On 1 January 1996, when the group returned from the holidays to their recording studio, Electric Palace, in London, they found that a water pipe had burst and had destroyed hundreds of thousands of pounds' worth of equipment. Despite the accident, a box of old tapes with a large number of archived tracks survived. These tracks, which had failed to make the previous three albums, were quickly considered for a release. Production ''Archiva 2'' was compiled from leftover tracks, which were recorded at various locations from 1988 to 1996. Asia (band)
Asia are an English rock supergroup formed in London in 1981. The most commercially successful line-up was its original, which consisted of four members of different progressive rock bands that had enjoyed great success in the 1970s: lead vocalist and bassist John Wetton of King Crimson and U.K., guitarist Steve Howe of Yes, keyboardist Geoff Downes of Yes and the Buggles, and drummer Carl Palmer of Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Their debut album, ''Asia'', released in 1982, remains their bestselling album and went to number one in several countries. The lead single from the album, " Heat of the Moment", remains their top charting and best-known song, reaching the top 40 in over a dozen markets and peaking in the U.S. at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. Eddie Schwartz
Edward Sydney Schwartz C.M. (born December 22, 1949) is a Canadian musician who had moderate success as a recording artist in the early 1980s before becoming a successful songwriter and record producer in the late 1980s and the 1990s. Songs he has written or co-written include the top-10 ''Billboard'' hits "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" (Pat Benatar, 1980), " Don't Shed a Tear" (Paul Carrack, 1987) and " The Doctor" (The Doobie Brothers, 1989). Elliott Randall
Elliott Randall (born June 15, 1947) is an American guitarist best known for being a session musician with popular artists. Randall played the well-known guitar solos from Steely Dan's song "Reelin' in the Years" and Irene Cara's song " Fame". The former solo was ranked as the 40th best guitar solo of all time by the readers of ''Guitar World'' magazine and the eighth best guitar solo by Q4 Music. Career Randall began taking piano lessons at age five. At nine, in 1956, he switched to guitar. He attended New York City's High School of Music & Art, where he was classmates with Laura Nyro and Michael Kamen. In 1963, at sixteen, Randall met Richie Havens in Greenwich Village and began gigging. Randall did some early work behind the Capris and the Ronettes, and by 1964 was recording "small-time" demos. Al Pitrelli
Al Pitrelli is an American guitarist, best known for his work with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Megadeth, Alice Cooper, Joe Lynn Turner, Asia and Savatage. Career Early career (1982–1995) Pitrelli attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston in the early 1980s (where keyboardist Derek Sherinian was his dorm roommate; they would later work together in the Alice Cooper band). While at Berklee, Pitrelli formed an original 1980s metal band with classmates that included Venom guitarist Mike Hickey. After dropping out of Berklee, Pitrelli worked as a session musician and taught guitar lessons in Manhattan and in Bellmore, Long Island. His first major label gig was performing with Michael Bolton, helping him support his single " Fool's Game". Mike Sturgis
Mike Sturgis is an American drummer, having played for the band 21 Guns and later with Iron Maiden guitarist Adrian Smith in Psycho Motel, where he played on both ''State of Mind'' (1996) and ''Welcome to the World'' (1997) albums. He was also the drummer for Wishbone Ash between 1995 and 1997 and drummer for Asia between 1994 and 2001. Sturgis began drumming at the age of ten and from 1982 to 1986 attended the University of Miami, where he received a degree in studio music and jazz. From 1986 to 1987, he toured with Norwegian band A-ha and played on "The Swing of Things", "I've Been Losing You" and "Soft Rains of April" from the album ''Scoundrel Days''. Showdown (Electric Light Orchestra Song)
"Showdown" is a 1973 song written by Jeff Lynne and recorded by the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). It was the band's last contemporary recording to be released on the Harvest label. It was released as a single and reached No 12 in the UK Singles Chart, in the week beginning 28 October, and No 9 on the Norwegian chart VG-lista. Release In the US the song was included on the album ''On the Third Day'' (1973), while in the UK the song was omitted from that album but featured a year later on the band's first compilation album, also entitled ''Showdown''. In 2006 the remastered issue of ''On the Third Day'' would feature the song on the album in both countries for the first time. The song showed a change of style for ELO, with a funkier backbeat beneath the band's trademark sweeping strings, and the inclusion of a clavinet. Inside Out Music is a German independent record label originally based in Kleve, North Rhine-Westphalia, and dedicated to the publication of progressive rock, progressive metal and related styles. In 2009, it formed a partnership with Century Media Records and moved its base of operations to Dortmund, also in North Rhine-Westphalia. In August 2015, Century Media was acquired by Sony Music and became its premier label for progressive music. Monmouthshire ( cy, Sir Fynwy) is a county in the south-east of Wales. The name derives from the historic county of the same name; the modern county covers the eastern three-fifths of the historic county. Rock Aid Armenia
Rock Aid Armenia, also known in earlier stages as Live Aid Armenia, was a humanitarian effort by the British music industry to raise money to help those affected by the 1988 Armenian earthquake. Initiated by the international charity campaigner Jon Dee, the project comprised a number of singles, compilations and a documentary. A special record label Life-Aid Armenia Records was established for producing and distributing the releases by Rock Aid Armenia. All of the Rock Aid Armenia projects were coordinated by Jon Dee. Dee started the project after overseeing the satellite transmission of footage from the Armenian earthquake zone which he distributed to TV newsrooms worldwide. Max Bacon
Max Bacon is an English rock singer. He was the lead singer for 1980s rock group GTR, as well as for Burn the Sky, Moby Dick, Nightwing, Phenomena, and Bronz. He was the vocalist on GTR's top 40 single, "When the Heart Rules the Mind" and GTR's self-titled debut album. Bacon's 1996 solo album ''The Higher You Climb'' included GTR material, and Bacon later sang lead on "Going, Going, Gone" on Steve Howe's 1999 release, '' Portraits of Bob Dylan''. Bacon sang lead on Mike Oldfield's 1987 album ''Islands'' which, in the U.S. version, featured the minor hit "Magic Touch", and was co-produced by Geoff Downes, who produced GTR. On The Third Day
''On the Third Day'' is the third studio album by Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), and the first to be recorded without input from Roy Wood. It was released in the United States in November 1973 by United Artists Records, and in the United Kingdom on 14 December 1973 by Warner Bros. Records. From this album on, the word ''The'' was dropped from the band's name. The album was reissued on 12 September 2006. Release ''On the Third Day'' was released in 1973 and failed to enter the UK charts at the time, although it did reach the US charts at number 52. Side two of the album was recorded during or shortly after the sessions for ELO's second album ''ELO 2''. ''On The Third Day'' contains shorter tracks than its predecessor, but the four songs on side one of the album were linked into a continuous suite. Electric Light Orchestra
The Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) are an English rock band formed in Birmingham in 1970 by songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood with drummer Bev Bevan. Their music is characterised by a fusion of pop, classical arrangements and futuristic iconography. After Wood's departure in 1972, Lynne became the band's sole leader, arranging and producing every album while writing nearly all of their original material. For their initial tenure, Lynne, Bevan and keyboardist Richard Tandy were the group's only consistent members. ELO was formed out of Lynne's and Wood's desire to create modern rock and pop songs with classical overtones.
