Architecture Of Letterkenny
As with other towns and cities in Ireland, Letterkenny has a history of great architecture. Many examples of ancient architecture remain in the town to the present day – though much has been lost also, through decay and modern development. Historical structures The Cathedral of St. Eunan and St Columba, built between 1890 and 1900, has one of the tallest steeples in Ireland. Located near the town centre on Castle Street, it is the only Catholic cathedral in the county; an older cathedral, now owned by the Church of Ireland and officially called The Cathedral Church of St. Eunan, is located in the town of Raphoe, about ten miles away. Letterkenny Cathedral was designed by William Hague from Cavan Town. It is built in the Victorian architecture, Victorian neo-Gothic style. Letterkenny Regional Cultural Centre
Regional Cultural Centre, Letterkenny is a cultural centre located in Letterkenny, County Donegal, Ireland. The centre is located behind An Grianán Theatre on the Port Road in the town and is the leading cultural centre in north-west Ireland. It has been described as a cultural beacon by ''The Irish Times'' second only to Kilkenny City in terms of cultural beaconess. Opening The centre opened on 9 July 2007. It was officially opened over one year later on 13 July 2008 by the Tánaiste, Mary Coughlan (politician), Mary Coughlan and fellow Donegal native and Fíanna Fáil chief whip Claire Sharkey. MacGabhann Architects are an architecture firm based in Letterkenny, County Donegal, Ireland. History MacGabhann Architects was founded in 1975 by Antoin MacGabhann Snr. The company expanded in 1997 when his sons Antoin and Tarla returned from Glasgow and Berlin respectively. Head offices are located in Letterkenny and Belfast. The firm represented Ireland at the 2006 Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition. Their design projects range from houses to public and private buildings. Donegal County Council ( ga, Comhairle Contae Dhún na nGall) is the authority responsible for local government in County Donegal, Ireland. As a county council, it is governed by the Local Government Act 2001. Letterkenny Library And Arts Centre
The Letterkenny Library and Arts Centre is located on St. Oliver Plunkett Road in the County Donegal town. It is the central library in the county and is an integral part of Donegal County Council's arts provision. It is the first arts centre operated by a local authority in Ireland. History The Centre opened in 1995 on the site of the demolished Literary Institute. The Literary Institute was built in 1876. It was donated to the town by Doctor Crerand from Illistrin and opened by the Lord Chancellor of Ireland, Lord O'Hagan. It was once a seminary used to train priests before St Eunan's College was built. It was also a school and a social club. An Grianán Theatre
An Grianán Theatre ( ga, Amharclann an Ghrianáin) is the largest theatre in County Donegal. Located in Letterkenny's Port Road district, its current director is Patricia McBride. With a seating capacity of 383, the theatre provides a range of programming including drama, comedy, music, pantomime, and family shows as well as workshops and classes. It is used annually as a festival venue, including for the Earagail Arts Festival, and has twice hosted Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. Rockhill Barracks
Rockhill Barracks ( ga, Beairic Chnoc na Carraige) was an Irish Army barracks located in Letterkenny, County Donegal. The Barracks was forced to close due to the 2008–2012 global recession, 2008 economic meltdown. History Rockhill House is a 30-room period building originally built as a manor house in the 17th century for the gentry. Captain Thomas Chambers is the earliest recorded occupier of the house in 1660. The present structure dates from 1824 and is a listed building. Rockhill House was occupied by The Irregulars during the Irish Civil War. They were removed from the building by a pro-treaty crowd who were led by Letterkenny native James McMonagle. Rockhill House which houses the barracks was later privately owned by Sir Charles John Stewart. His two sons were killed during World War I.
