Archibald J. McArthur
Archibald John "A.J." McArthur (February 21, 1857 – June 5, 1911) was a Canadian politician. Early life Archibald moved to Calgary in 1887. He was active in the community, founding the Calgary neighborhood (then village) of Crescent Heights. He served on the YMCA board of directors in Calgary, and became Deacon of the First Baptist Church. Archibald used his community involvement to help win a bitter by-election for the Alberta Liberal Party on October 3, 1910, for a seat in the 2nd Alberta Legislature against well known incumbent and Calgary rancher Ezra Riley. John Peter McArthur
John Peter McArthur (July 16, 1862 – February 19, 1942) was a politician from Alberta, Canada. McArthur first ran for the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in a by-election on October 31, 1911 after the death of his brother Archibald J. McArthur a few months earlier. He would have Harold Riley who was the brother of Ezra Riley the previous representative for the seat, in the brothers by-election. McArthur would be handily defeated as Riley and the Conservatives would surprisingly sweep this and 3 other by-elections in a wave of support held on the same day. During the 1913 Alberta general election Incumbent Riley moved to the neighboring electoral district of Bow Valley leaving the riding vacant. The Legislative Assembly of Alberta is the deliberative assembly of the province of Alberta, Canada. It sits in the Alberta Legislature Building in Edmonton. The Legislative Assembly currently has 87 members, elected first past the post from single-member electoral districts. Bills passed by the Legislative Assembly are given royal assent by the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, as the viceregal representative of the King of Canada. 2nd Alberta Legislature
The 2nd Alberta Legislative Assembly was in session from March 23, 1909, to April 17, 1913, with the membership of the assembly determined by the results of the 1909 Alberta general election which was held on March 22, 1909. The Legislature officially resumed on March 23, 1909, and continued until the fourth session was prorogued and dissolved on March 25, 1913, prior to the 1913 Alberta general election. Alberta's second government was controlled by the majority Liberal Party led by Premier Alexander Rutherford until he resigned on May 26, 1910 due to the Alberta and Great Waterways Railway scandal, Rutherford was subsequently replaced by Arthur Sifton. Crescent Heights, Calgary
Crescent Heights is a neighbourhood (formerly its own village) located in Calgary, Alberta. It is located in the inner city, immediately north from Downtown. It is bounded to the north by the Trans-Canada Highway, on the east by Edmonton Trail, on the west by 4th Street NW, and to the south by Memorial Drive and the Bow River. Crescent Heights was originally incorporated as a village on May 1, 1908. It was subsequently annexed by the City of Calgary in 1911 and established as a neighbourhood in 1914.
