Archibald C. McGowan
Archibald C. McGowan (August 26, 1822 – February 20, 1893) was an American merchant and politician from New York (state), New York. Life He was the son of Clark McGowan (died 1824) and Mary (Carpenter) McGowan (died 1824). He attended the district schools, and Jonesville Academy in Saratoga County, New York. About 1839, he began to work as a clerk in Troy, New York, Troy, and in 1845 became a partner in a canal store in Clifton Park, New York, Clifton Park, and engaged in the coal and lumber trade. In 1846, he married Mary Louisa Rogers (1825–1897), and they had three children. In 1854, he moved to Herkimer County, New York, and founded McGowansville (now East Frankfort, New York, East Frankfort). There he built a dry dock, opened a general store, ran canal boats, and became President of the Frankfort and Ilion Railroad. Pownal, Vermont
Pownal is a town in Bennington County, Vermont, United States. As of the 2020 census, the town population was 3,258. The town of Pownal includes the villages of Pownal, North Pownal, and Pownal Center. History During the Woodland period, the area was settled by the Mahican people, with others, such as the Mohawks, traveling across it. By the late 17th century, Europeans may have entered the area as a result of the establishment of the Dutch patroonship owned by Kiliaen van Rensselaer, the Manor of Rensselaerswyck, which extended west and east out of Albany and the fur trading community of Beverwyck. The southwestern corner of Pownal was part of the patroonship. Rensselaerswyck passed into English control in 1664. The first European settlers may have entered the area in the 1730s. Those settlers may have been Dutch or other Europeans who leased land within Rensselaerwyck.
