It was designated a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation in 1983. History Archbold was founded in 1855 when the railroad was extended to that point. The village was probably named for John Archbald, a railroad promoter, though another tradition is that the name is an amalgamation of Arch and Bald, two other railroad officials.
