''Neues Geistliches Lied'' (, ''new spiritual song''), abbreviated NGL, is a music genre of songs in German intended for church usage, and based on contemporary lyrics and with music by contemporary composers. History The idea to reach young people by new songs for church services began in the 1950s. The first song in the genre was in 1955 ''Seigneur, mon ami'' by Père Duval who performed his religious chansons at the Protestant church assembly ''Kirchentag'' in 1962. Christians looked for an expression for reformation of thoughts and liturgy in the churches. The Protestant Evangelische Akademie Tutzing organised competitions, initiated by the minister for students (''Studentenpfarrer'') in Munich, Günther Hegele. Patrick Dehm (born 1962) is a German Catholic theologian, supervisor and clinical Gestalt therapist. He and his brother founded the Eugen Dehm foundation, supporting a holistic health concept, in memory of their father. Horst Christill (born 1959) is a German church musician and composer of sacred music, especially hymns of the genre Neues Geistliches Lied (NGL). Life and career Born in Annweiler am Trifels, Christill first studied from 1976 music pedagogy, focused on piano, at the Musikhochschule Saarbrücken, completing with the concert exam in 1983. He then studied Catholic church music at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, completing with the A exam in 1988. ''Gotteslob'' ("Praise of God") is the title of the hymnbook authorized by the Catholic dioceses in Germany, Austria, South Tyrol, Luxembourg and Liège, Belgium. First published in Advent 2013, it is the current official hymnal for German-speaking Catholics, succeeding the first common German hymnal, the 1975 edition of the same name. Each diocese published a book containing a common section and a regional section. The first editions amounted to around 4 million copies. History ''Gotteslob'' was developed as a sequel of the first common German hymnal, ''Gotteslob'' of 1975. Dieter Trautwein (30 July 1928 – 9 November 2002) was a German Protestant theologian and writer of numerous Christian hymns of the genre Neues Geistliches Lied (NGL). Biography Born in Holzhausen am Hünstein (today Dautphetal), Trautwein studied theology in Marburg, Mainz and Heidelberg. After several postings as a vicar in Königstein, Limburg and Bad Nauheim, he served from 1963 to 1970 in positions involving him with the training of new ministers in Frankfurt am Main. In 1969 the Synod of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau appointed him as provost for Frankfurt. He would continue in this position until 1988. He received his Doctorate of Theology in 1971 from the University of Tübingen with a dissertation dealing with the changing form of worship. After the end of his term as provost, Trautwein became the chairman and manager of the Frankfurter Bibelgesellschaft. Manfred Siebald (born 26 October 1948 at Alheim-Baumbach) is a German singer-songwriter and lecturer in American studies in Mainz. Kurt Rommel (20 December 1926 – 5 March 2011) was a German Protestant pastor of the Evangelische Landeskirche in Württemberg, author of spiritual books, and hymnodist. He wrote text and tune of hymns contained in both Protestant and Catholic hymnals. Career Born in Kirchheim unter Teck, Rommel was drafted to the Wehrmacht after his Abitur. He became a prisoner-of-war in France, where he was able to study Protestant theology. He worked as a parish pastor in Friedrichshafen and then at the St. Paulus church in Schwenningen from 1966. Siegfried Fietz (; born 25 May 1946) is a German singer-songwriter, composer, music producer and sculptor. He is known for songs of the genre Neues Geistliches Lied, particularly his setting of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's poem " Von guten Mächten". Career Born in Berleburg, Fietz grew up in Hilchenbach. He began to play on his father's violin at age five, and learned to play the guitar a little later. He began voice training at age 15, and piano lessons at age 17. Oskar Gottlieb Blarr
Oskar Gottlieb Blarr (born 6 May 1934) is a German composer, organist, church musician and academic teacher. Career Blarr was born in Sandlack near Bartenstein (East Prussia). The Gothic church with its Baroque organ fascinated him early on; he began to form a lifelong love for organs. Blarr and his family fled to West Germany in 1945. He wrote his first compositions at the age of 12. He studied church music from 1952 at the Kirchenmusikschule in Hannover, percussion at the Musikhochschule Hannover, and composition with Heinrich Spitta. Clemens Bittlinger (born 8 August 1959) is a German Protestant minister, author of books as well as a song writer of religious-themed songs (German: Neues Geistliches Lied, NGL) and children's songs in German. Life Clemens Bittlinger was born in 1959 in Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg, West Germany. He was brought up with three siblings in Germany and the United States, moving around to places where his father was a priest. Inspired by the guitarist John Pearse, he started to play the guitar when he was 14. He also started to write his own songs; and in 1978 he recorded four of them on his first EP.
