Ararat Football Club
The Ararat Football Club, nicknamed the ''Rats'', is an Australian rules football and netball club based in the city of Ararat, Victoria. The football team currently competes in the Wimmera Football League (WFL). History Formed in 1871, Ararat won eight premierships in the Wimmera and District Football Association during the early 20th century. From 1924 to 1928, they played in the Ballarat Football League. They did not return to the Wimmera league until 1930, as they were forced to sit out of the competition for a year as punishment for their earlier defection. From 1934 to 1936 they took part in Ballarat-Wimmera FL. The Wimmera Football League was reformed in 1937 and Ararat have participated since the beginning. They are the second most successful club in the league in terms of premierships, behind Horsham. Wimmera Football League
The Wimmera Football League is a major Australian rules country league based in Western Victoria, with clubs located in towns in the Wimmera region: the regional centres along the Western Highway from Ararat to Nhill as well as Minyip-Murtoa and Warracknabeal. History A Wimmera Football Association was first formed in 1902, with teams from Ararat, Horsham and Stawell as the founding clubs. In 1921 the Wimmera District Football League was formed. The seven original clubs were Ararat, Horsham, Minyip, Murtoa, Rupanyup, Stawell and Warracknabael. Dimboola joined in 1923 and Nhill in 1925; Ararat spent six years in the Ballarat Football League from 1924 to 1929. In 1932, during the height of the Great Depression, the small town clubs were suffering from financial pressures, and tried to get the league to change the way the gate taking were distributed to the clubs. Doug Tassell
Douglas Clyde Tassell (28 December 1945 – 20 June 1970) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League The Victorian Football League (VFL) is an Australian rules football league in Australia serving as one of the second-tier regional semi-professional competitions which sit underneath the fully professional Australian Football League (AFL). It ... (VFL). A half back flanker, Tassell played nine games in 1969 after coming to the club from Ararat. During the season he built a house for his wife Elaine and son Rick in Ararat and was undecided on whether to stay in Melbourne. However, following play in the first 11 rounds of the 1970 VFL season, Tassell was killed in a car accident at the age of 24. Lauchlan Dalgleish (born 22 June 1993) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was recruited by Essendon with the 11th pick in the 2012 rookie draft. Dalgleish won the 120-metre Terang Gift in 12.25 seconds three days after missing out in the national draft and is known for his work ethic, speed and agility as a midfielder. He made his AFL debut in round 21 of the 2013 season, playing three games and kicking one goal for the season. In October, 2013, the Essendon Football Club announced that Dalgleish had been promoted to the senior list for season 2014. Barry Grinter
Barry W. Grinter (born 1 October 1951) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon and Richmond in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1970s. Grinter played most of his football either as a ruckman or defender. A left-footed player, he was recruited to Essendon from Ararat. From 1974 to 1976, Grinter put together 46 consecutive games and was the runner-up in Essendon's 1975 'Best and Fairest' award. Barry Price
Barry Price (born 8 March 1949) is a former Australian rules footballer who played 158 games and scored 60 goals with Collingwood Football Club between 1969 and 1977. Price was a superb midfielder in a strong Collingwood outfit. Quick, decisive, and elusive, he was soon teaming to telling effect with the Magpies' champion full forward, Peter McKenna. In the four years that Price was at his best, 1969, 1970, 1971, and 1972, McKenna kicked 505 goals, many of them from bullet stab passes from Price. McKenna claimed that Price's kicks were so hard, even from as far as 60 metres away, that after marking them, he would have red marks on his chest for days. Though only 177 cm tall, Price was courageous and just as productive with his hands as his feet. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). Tom Williamson (Australian Footballer)
Tom Williamson (born 12 December 1998) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Carlton Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Hailing from Ararat, Williamson played TAC Cup football with North Ballarat until 2016. At the draft combine that year he scored particularly well in fitness indicators including placing first in the agility test and finishing second in the 3 km time trial, and he was drafted to the AFL by with the club's fifth selection and the sixty-first overall in the 2016 national draft.
