An apostolic nuncio ( la, nuntius apostolicus; also known as a papal nuncio or simply as a nuncio) is an ecclesiastical diplomat, serving as an envoy or a permanent diplomatic representative of the Holy See to a state or to an international organization. A nuncio is appointed by and represents the Holy See, and is the head of the diplomatic mission, called an Apostolic Nunciature, which is the equivalent of an embassy. Pio Laghi
Pio Laghi (21 May 1922 – 10 January 2009) was an Italian cardinal of the Catholic Church. His service was primarily in the diplomatic service of the Holy See and the Roman Curia. He served as Apostolic nuncio to several countries and as the Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education. He was elevated to the cardinalate in 1991. Cardinal Laghi was Pope John Paul II's secret emissary to the White House and to several presidents of the United States. He had a particularly close relationship with George H. W. William Aquin Carew
William Aquin Carew (October 23, 1922 – May 8, 2012) was a Canadian prelate of the Catholic Church who worked in the diplomatic service of the Holy See from 1953 to 1997. Biography Carew was born in St. John's, Newfoundland on October 23, 1922. He attended St. Bonaventure's College from 1937 to 1940 and then St. Paul's Seminary at the University of Ottawa. He ordained a priest on June 15, 1947. He earned a doctorate in canon law from St. Paul's in 1950, choosing as his dissertation topic "The Apostolic Delegate". From 1947 to 1950, he was secretary to the Apostolic Nuncio to Canada, Archbishop Ildebrando Antoniutti. Andrea Cordero Lanza Di Montezemolo
Andrea Cordero Lanza di Montezemolo (27 August 1925 – 19 November 2017) was an Italian prelate of the Catholic church. He worked in the diplomatic service of the Holy See from 1977 until he retired in 2001. As Archpriest of the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls from 2005 to 2009 he helped oversee important restoration work. He was made a cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI on 24 March 2006. Family Montezemolo was born in Turin, Italy of a noble family. His father Giuseppe was an Army officer, tortured and executed during the Ardeatine massacre for his role in resisting the Nazi occupation of Rome. Pietro Sambi (27 June 1938 – 27 July 2011) was an Italian Roman Catholic prelate who served in the diplomatic service of the Holy See from 1969 until his death in 2011. He had the rank of archbishop and the title of nuncio from 1985, fulfilling assignments in Burundi, Indonesia, Cyprus, Israel, Jerusalem and Palestine, and the United States. He was ordained a priest of Telese o Cerreto Sannita on 10 July 1960. To prepare for a diplomatic career he entered the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in 1968.
