"Apartment No. 9" (also referred to as "Apartment #9") is a song written by Bobby Austin and Johnny Paycheck. It was originally recorded by American country musician Bobby Austin in 1966 and became a top 40 hit on the ''Billboard'' country songs chart. It was recorded soon after by American country artist Tammy Wynette who also had minor success on the country songs survey. Although not the original version, Wynette's cover of "Apartment No. 9" is considered one of her most significant and signature songs of her career. "Apartment No. 9" would be the first song to win the "Song of the Year" accolade at the Academy of Country Music Awards in 1966. Bobby Austin (May 5, 1933 in Wenatchee, Washington – January 6, 2002 in Camas, Washington) was an American country musician. Austin moved to Los Angeles in 1955, where he played bass in Wynn Stewart's band. He also worked as a session musician, for Buck Owens and Tommy Collins, among others, before being signed by Capitol Records as a solo artist in 1962. His " Apartment No. 9", written with Johnny Paycheck, was a hit for Tammy Wynette, in addition to reaching No. 21 on the U.S. country charts with his own version. Quonset Hut Studio was a music recording studio established in 1954 in Nashville, Tennessee by brothers Harold and Owen Bradley as Bradley's Film & Recording Studios and later operated as Columbia Studio B. The Quonset Hut was the first commercial recording studio in what would later become known as Music Row. Today the studio serves as a recording classroom for Belmont University. History In 1954, producer Owen Bradley, along with his brother Harold Bradley, purchased a house at 804 16th Avenue South in Nashville for $7500 to convert into a film and recording studio. The Bradleys tore out the first floor of the house to create recording space in the basement. Billy Norris Sherrill (November 5, 1936 – August 4, 2015) was an American record producer, songwriter, and arranger best known for his association with country artists, notably Tammy Wynette and George Jones. Sherrill and business partner Glenn Sutton are regarded as the defining influences of the countrypolitan sound, a smooth amalgamation of pop and country music that was popular during the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s.
