Walfrido Antão was a prolific '' cronista'' and short story writer in the Portuguese-language Goan press, becoming particularly active as this tradition breathed its last. The crónica is a journalistic form common in Iberia and Latin America and which was widely cultivated in Portuguese Goa. It can be roughly defined as a literary text combining elements of the short story, the memoir and the opinion editorial. Antão de Almada (19 April 1718 – 26 January 1797), 9th Master of Pombalinho, and 14th Majorat of Lagares d’El-Rei, was the Grand Master of Ceremonies for the Royal House and, owing to his positions, made administrator of a few Portuguese colonies, including the first Captaincy-General of the Azores, Captain-General of the Azores. D. Antão Vaz de Almada (c. 1573 – 17 December 1644) is a Portuguese national hero due to his involvement in the Restoration of Independence in 1640, as one of the Forty Conspirators. John da Silva Antão (born March 1933 in Salreu, Estarreja, Portugal) is a priest in the Archdiocese of Newark, and a religious leader of the Portuguese-American community in New Jersey and a community leader in Elizabeth, NJ. Early years and studies The son of a farmer, Antão entered the seminary at the early age of 11 in the city of Aveiro, Portugal and in 1956 the Patriarchal Seminary of Lisbon in Olivais. After his parents immigrated to the United States he went on to continue his studies at Immaculate Conception Seminary, the school of theology at Seton Hall University, then located in Darlington, NJ. Antão Gonçalves was a 15th-century Portuguese explorer who was the first European to capture Africans in the Rio do Ouro region. Biography In 1441, Gonçalves was sent by Henry the Navigator to explore the West African coast in an expedition under the command of Nuno Tristão. As Gonçalves was considerably younger than Tristão, his duty was less exploration than it was hunting the Mediterranean monk seals that inhabit West Africa. After he had filled his small vessel with seal skins, Gonçalves, on his own initiative, decided to capture some Africans to return to Portugal. With nine of his crewmen, Gonçalves captured a tribesmen and a black women who was working as a servant for the group. By this time, Tristão had arrived at the same place, and the two crews joined together for another capturing trip, on which they captured 10 tribesmen, one of them a nobleman named Adahu.
