Antwerpen-Linkeroever Railway Station
Antwerpen Linkeroever was the name of two different historical railway stations located on line 59 Antwerp-Ghent, in the Linkeroever area, Antwerp. The station was finally closed in 1984. History The oldest station to be constructed at the location was opened on November 3, 1844 as station Vlaams Hoofd. After the annexation of the village of Vlaams-Hoofd by Antwerp in the name changed to station Antwerpen-West. Belgian Railway Line 59
The Belgian railway line 59 is a railway line in Belgium connecting Antwerp with Ghent. It was opened between 1844 and 1847. Until 1970, the eastern terminus of the railway was a station on the left bank of the river Scheldt, opposite the city centre of Antwerp. Since 1970, the railway is connected to Antwerp central station by a rail tunnel under the Scheldt. The total length of the line between Antwerpen-Berchem and Gent-Dampoort (the section between Gent-Dampoort and Gent-Sint-Pieters is part of line 58 Ghent – Eeklo) is 55.8 km. The ''Gazet van Antwerpen'' (Antwerp Gazette, popularly named ''De Frut'', "sour head cheese") is a Belgian newspaper in Antwerp and Flanders, published by Concentra. History and profile ''Gazet van Antwerpen'' was established in 1891. Its editor was Jan Baptist Napolitaan Van Os, a Catholic. Shortly afterwards, the company ''NV De Vlijt'' took over the newspaper. Circulation rose to 25,000 in 1893 and 40,000 in 1896. Around World War I, its circulation was just short of 100,000. In 1973, ''Gazet van Antwerpen'' reached its peak of 210,000.
