The Awakening (band)
The Awakening is a South African gothic metal band founded in Johannesburg in 1995 by vocalist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Ashton Nyte. The sound has been described as a hybrid of gothic metal, gothic rock, darkwave, industrial rock, and new wave – a combination that was loosely described by Nyte in 1999 as "dark future rock." The Awakening has released ten studio albums, several singles, EPs, and two greatest hits compilations in total. As of 2009, The Awakening has been based in the United States. The Awakening is credited in the press as "South Africa's most successful gothic rock act and one of the top bands in the far broader alternative scene." Gothic Rock
Gothic rock (also called goth rock or simply goth) is a style of rock music that emerged from post-punk in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s. The first post-punk bands which shifted toward dark music with gothic overtones include Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, Bauhaus, and the Cure. The genre itself was defined as a separate movement from post-punk. Gothic rock stood out due to its darker sound, with the use of primarily minor or bass chords, reverb, dark arrangements, or dramatic and melancholic melodies, having inspirations in gothic literature allied with themes such as sadness, nihilism, dark romanticism, tragedy, melancholy and morbidity. These themes are often approached poetically. The sensibilities of the genre led the lyrics to represent the evil of the century and the romantic idealization of death and the supernatural imagination. Dark wave (also typeset as darkwave) is a music genre that emerged from the new wave and post-punk movement of the late 1970s. Dark wave compositions are largely based on minor key tonality and introspective lyrics and have been perceived as being dark, romantic and bleak, with an undertone of sorrow. ''Tales of Absolution & Obsoletion'' is the eighth studio album by South African gothic rock band The Awakening, released worldwide via Intervention Arts in June 2009. Recording The Awakening's eighth full-length studio album released June 2009, ''Tales'' is described as "a return to Zeen/Dark Romantics-era classic gothic rock." The album represents the longest lapse between releases, a full three years having passed since the band's previous release, Razor Burn. It was the first of the band's albums to be cross-continentally written and recorded, as the band has been based in the United States since late 2007 but recorded various tracks from ''Tales'' in both South Africa and the USA.
