Anthem To Beauty
''Anthem to Beauty'' is a music documentary about the making of the Grateful Dead albums ''Anthem of the Sun'' and '' American Beauty''. It originally aired in a somewhat shortened version in 1997 as part of the television series ''Classic Albums''. It was released on VHS video tape in 1998 and on DVD in 1999, with a running time of 1 hour 15 minutes. Synopsis The video combines footage from the early years of the Grateful Dead with 1997 interviews of former band members and associates. Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, Bob Weir, Robert Hunter, and David Grisman, among others, discuss the creation of 1968's experimental, psychedelic ''Anthem of the Sun'' and 1970's folk-rock classic ''American Beauty''. They also listen to and analyze the original master recordings for the albums, and talk about being in (or working with) the Grateful Dead at that time. Jeremy Marre
Jeremy Marre (7 October 1943 – 15 March 2020) was an English television director, writer and producer who founded Harcourt Films and made films around the world. Much of his work focused on musical subjects. His reputation was made with the ''Beats of the Heart'' series, which introduced elements of what is now called world music, and its performers, to the Western world. Jerry Garcia
Jerome John Garcia (August 1, 1942 – August 9, 1995) was an American musician best known for being the principal songwriter, lead guitarist, and a vocalist with the rock band Grateful Dead, which he co-founded and which came to prominence during the counterculture of the 1960s. Although he disavowed the role, Garcia was viewed by many as the leader of the band. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 as a member of the Grateful Dead. As one of its founders, Garcia performed with the Grateful Dead for the band's entire 30-year career (1965–1995). David Gans (born October 29, 1953) is an American musician, songwriter, and music journalist. He is a guitarist, and is known for incisive, literate songwriting. He is also noted for his music loop work, often creating spontaneous compositions in performance. He is the co-author of the book ''Playing in the Band: An Oral and Visual Portrait of the Grateful Dead'', and the host of the weekly syndicated radio show ''The Grateful Dead Hour''. Written by Robert Hunter and Bob Weir, it is one of the most well-known songs by the band, alongside such hits as "Truckin'", "Casey Jones", "Uncle John's Band", "Touch of Grey", and fellow sugar-adjacent tune "Sugaree". David Crosby
David Van Cortlandt Crosby (born August 14, 1941) is an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter. In addition to his solo career, he was a founding member of both the Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Crosby joined the Byrds in 1964. They got their first number-one hit in April 1965 with a cover of " Mr. Tambourine Man" by Bob Dylan. Crosby appeared on the Byrds' first five albums and produced the original lineup's 1973 reunion album. "Born Cross-Eyed" is an original composition by the San Francisco psychedelic rock group the Grateful Dead. It was written by rhythm guitarist Bob Weir during the band's sessions creating the album ''Anthem of the Sun'', produced by David Hassinger, in 1968. It was released as a B-side with the single " Dark Star", one of the band's best-known musical excursions. The single was first released in April 1968 by Warner Bros. Records and is a different mix than the version included on the ''Anthem of the Sun'' album. The single was re-released in the UK in 1977 as a promotion distributed with the Dark Star magazine. The single release included lyrics of Dark Star on the back cover. While writing the single Weir said he wanted the abrupt, brief breaks in the music to sound like "thick air".
