George Anson (1731-1789)
George Anson (25 July 1731 – 27 October 1789), known as George Adams until 1773, was a Staffordshire landowner from the Anson family and a British Whig politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1761 and 1769. Background Anson was the son of Sambrooke Adams and his wife Janette Anson, who was the daughter of William Anson and the sister of the naval commander Admiral George Anson, 1st Baron Anson, and the dilettante Thomas Anson. Public life As George Adams, Anson was elected Member of Parliament for Saltash when his uncle died in 1761, a seat he held until 1768. He was returned to Parliament as one of two representatives for Lichfield in 1770, a seat he held until his death. The Master of the Buckhounds (or Master of the Hounds) was an officer in the Master of the Horse's department of the British Royal Household. The holder was also His/Her Majesty's Representative at Ascot. The role was to oversee a hunting pack; a buckhound is smaller than a staghound and used for coursing the smaller breeds of deer, especially fallow deer. The position was abolished by the Civil List Act 1901. History Hunting had played a role among England's royalty. The specific role of master of the hounds was first mentioned during the reign of Edward III. At this time it was a hereditary position held by the Brocas family. Thomas William Anson, 1st Earl of Lichfield PC (20 October 1795 – 18 March 1854), previously known as The Viscount Anson from 1818 to 1831, was a British Whig politician from the Anson family. He served under Lord Grey and Lord Melbourne as Master of the Buckhounds between 1830 and 1834 and under Melbourne Postmaster General between 1835 and 1841. His gambling and lavish entertaining got him heavily into debt and he was forced to sell off the entire contents of his Shugborough Hall estate. The Anson baronetcy, of Birch Hall in the County Palatine of Lancaster, is a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom held by a branch of the Anson family. It was created on 30 September 1831 for William Anson. He was the third son of George Anson; his elder brothers were Thomas Anson, 1st Viscount Anson, and General Sir George Anson. Sir William was the uncle of Thomas Anson, 1st Earl of Lichfield, and Major-General George Anson and the great-nephew of George Anson, 1st Baron Anson (see Earl of Lichfield, 1831 creation, for more information on the Anson family). General Sir William Anson, 1st Baronet, (13 August 1772 – 13 January 1847) was a British officer from the Anson family. He became a general in the British Army and noted for his service in Peninsular War. Early life William Anson was born on 13 August 1772, the third son of George Anson and Mary Vernon; until 1773 his family went by the surname of Adams. His maternal grandfather was Lord Vernon, and his brothers included the future Lord Anson and General Sir George Anson. He spent his childhood at the family home of Shugborough Hall in Staffordshire. Thomas Anson, 1st Viscount Anson (14 February 1767 – 31 July 1818) was a British politician and peer from the Anson family. Background and career Thomas Anson was born 14 February 1767, the first son of George Anson, of Shugborough and Mary Vernon, the daughter of George Venables Vernon. The family's surname was Adams until 1773, when his father inherited the Anson estates upon the death of his maternal uncles and his unmarried older brother, Thomas. He was the brother of Mary Anson (born 1759), who married Sir Francis Ford, 1st Baronet, in 1785. Thomas's brothers included army generals Sir George Anson and Sir William Anson.
