The Durutti Column
The Durutti Column are an English post-punk band formed in 1978 in Manchester, England.Strong, Martin C. Counterfeit EP
''Counterfeit e.p.'' is the first solo recording by Martin L. Gore, the primary songwriter for the band Depeche Mode. Background Released in 1989, ''Counterfeit'' is a six-song E.P. of cover songs, hence the name, implying that the songs were not written by Gore. ''Counterfeit'' was recorded during a band hiatus after recording and touring for the album ''Music for the Masses''; bandmate Alan Wilder also recorded and released ''Hydrology'' under the pseudonym Recoil during this period. Even though the release has the letters "e.p." in its title, Mute Records issued it an album catalogue number (STUMM67). The German word for "mute" is '' stumm ''. Martin Gore
Martin Lee Gore (born 23 July 1961) is an English songwriter, musician, singer, record producer and DJ. He is one of the founding members of the electronic rock band Depeche Mode and is the band's main songwriter. He is the band's guitarist and keyboardist, and occasionally provides lead vocals. Gore possesses a tenor singing voice which contrasts with Dave Gahan's dramatic baritone. He is also known for his flamboyant and (sometimes) androgynous stage persona. Gore has also released several solo albums and collaborated with former Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke as part of VCMG. Gore's songs include themes such as sex, religion and politics. He has said he feels lyrical themes that tackle issues related to solitude and loneliness are a better representation of reality, whereas he finds "happy songs" fake and unrealistic. Depeche Mode are an English electronic music band formed in Basildon, Essex, in 1980. The band currently consists of Dave Gahan (lead vocals and co-songwriting) and Martin Gore (keyboards, guitar, co-lead vocals and main songwriting). Depeche Mode, originally formed by the lineup of Gahan, Gore, Andy Fletcher and Vince Clarke, released their debut album '' Speak & Spell'' in 1981, bringing the band onto the British new wave scene. Mark Farrow was named Designer of the Year in the Creative Review Peer Poll in 2004, voting him ‘the most important graphic designer working today’. Bruce Mitchell (drummer)
Bruce Mitchell (born 6 June 1940) is an English jazz drummer, who plays regularly with Vini Reilly in the Durutti Column. Biography Mitchell was born in the suburb of Didsbury, in the south of Manchester, on 6 June 1940. He had no formal musical education. His father was a drummer and a bass player. He was in a Manchester trad band, around 1960, and during a time, he was a hippie. Prior to 1974 he was in the group Greasy Bear. In 1974 he joined comedy rock band Alberto y Lost Trios Paranoias; the band folded in 1982. He also helps run Manchester Light and Stage. Strawberry Studios
Strawberry Studios was a recording studio in Stockport, England. Founded in 1968, it operated until the early 1990s. Formation The facility was originally called Inter-City Studios and located above a music store in the town centre. In early 1968 it was bought by Peter Tattersall, a former road manager for Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas. Tattersall invited Eric Stewart, then lead guitarist and singer of the Mindbenders and later a member of 10cc, to join him as a partner in July 1968. The pair moved to larger premises at No. 3 Waterloo Road in October, with Stewart choosing the studio's new name in honour of his favourite Beatles song, " Strawberry Fields Forever". Within months songwriter and future 10cc member Graham Gouldman joined the pair as an investor. The studio was used extensively by Stewart, Gouldman and the other two musicians who would join them to form 10cc, Lol Creme and Kevin Godley. ''Without Mercy'' is the fourth studio album by English band The Durutti Column, released in October 1984 on Factory Records. After the band and label boss Tony Wilson were unanimous in their dislike of ''Another Setting'' (1983), Wilson pushed the band towards progressing to a new, classical-inspired sound. The band went on to record ''Short Stories for Pauline'', which went unreleased when Wilson refused to release it, though one track, "Little Mercy", kept Wilson's attention. He asked the band to use it as the foundation for a different album, ultimately becoming ''Without Mercy''. With a dramatically extended line-up, featuring classical musicians such as cello player Caroline Lavelle and Tuxedomoon violinist Blaine L. Reininger, ''Without Mercy'' was recorded in Strawberry Studios. ''LC'' is the second studio album by English band The Durutti Column. It was released in November 1981 through Manchester record label Factory. Background The album was the first to feature drummer and percussionist Bruce Mitchell. The song "The Missing Boy" is a tribute to songwriter Vini Reilly's friend and label-mate Ian Curtis of Joy Division, who committed suicide in the previous year. Release ''LC'' was released in November 1981. It was reissued in January 2013 on the reactivated Factory Benelux as a double-CD package.
