Annis Jensen
Annis "Big Red" Jensen (September 20, 1921 – January 10, 2015) was an American roller derby skater. In 1954, she was the first women's captain of the San Francisco Bay Bombers in the IRDL professional roller derby league. At the time of retirement in 1969, she was the oldest active skater in league history. In 1960, she was inducted into the Roller Derby Hall of Fame. She returned to active skating, again with the Bay Bombers, in mid 1974 skating alongside Ann Calvello, Joan Weston, and Jensen's daughter, Barbara Baker. Roller Derby
Roller derby is a roller skating contact sport played by two teams of fifteen members. Roller derby is played by approximately 1,250 amateur leagues worldwide, mostly in the United States. Game play consists of a series of short scrimmages (jams) in which both teams designate a jammer (who uniquely wears a star on the helmet) and four blockers to skate counter-clockwise around a track. The jammer scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to hinder the opposing jammer while assisting their own jammer—in effect, playing both offense and defense simultaneously. San Francisco Bay Bombers
The American Roller Skating Derby (ARSD) was a professional roller derby league. As of 2012, the ARSD consisted of six teams: the San Francisco Bay Bombers, the Los Angeles Firebirds (formerly the San Diego Firebirds), the Chicago Pioneers, the Brooklyn Red Devils, the Eastern Chiefs (aka the New York Chiefs) and the Orlando Thunder. Most trained and competed in the East Bay area (near San Francisco, California), but one team, the Firebirds, was based in Escondido, near San Diego. Unlike leagues in the past, the ARSD invested in building a new track, and new uniforms. Ferrari made arrangements to have the tracks up at different venues for additional training, and in some cases, for a week or more at a time. The Roller Derby Hall of Fame, also known as the National Roller Derby Hall of Fame, was founded in 1952,William H. Young and Nancy K. Young, ''World War II and the Postwar Years in America'', p.596 by the editors of the ''Roller Derby News'' paper. Johnny Rosasco and Josephine Bogash, Josephine "Ma" Bogash were the first two skaters to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame was initially displayed at Madison Square Garden, where the home offices of the sport were located. Skaters could only be inducted after their retirement. Ann Calvello
Ann Theresa Calvello (August 1, 1929 – March 14, 2006) was an American athlete and notable personality in the sport of roller derby. Ann Calvello graduated from Presentation High School in San Francisco in June 1947. Calvello competed in roller derby in seven decades, the 1940s through the 2000s. She broke into the sport in 1948 originally skating for a league called International Roller Speedway. Skating with the original Roller Derby, beginning in 1948, she would be named women's 'Captain' of her team within six months. Calvello, who often sported dyed hair and color-coordinated uniforms, was known for her temper. She was nicknamed "Banana-Nose" by legendary skater, Buddy Atkinson, Sr.. She traveled the world skating in Europe, Guam, Philippines, Cuba, Australia and all over the United States. She broke her nose 12 times during her career. Joan Weston
Joan Weston or Joanie Weston (January 20, 1935 – May 10, 1997), known as the "Blonde Bomber", "Blonde Amazon", "Golden Girl", and "Roller Derby Queen", was an American athlete and was the most famous personality in the original Roller Derby. Biography Weston was born in Huntington Beach, California, in 1935, and grew up in nearby Downey. In 1954, Weston joined the original Roller Derby headed by promoter Leo Seltzer, becoming a favorite member of the Los Angeles Braves. Her fame increased markedly when in 1965 she was appointed captain of the San Francisco Bay Bombers. She appeared on 19 consecutive all-star teams in that sport, and was the highest-paid female athlete in the 1960s and 1970s. Joan usually skated as the distaff heroine of the sport, no matter what team she appeared with. She remains the most beloved of all historical Roller Derby stars.
