Annea Lockwood
Annea Lockwood (born July 29, 1939, in Christchurch, New Zealand) is a New Zealand-born American composer and academic musician. She taught electronic music at Vassar College. Her work often involves recordings of natural Musique concrète, found sounds. She has also recorded Fluxus-inspired pieces involving piano burning, burning or drowning pianos. Life and career Lockwood studied composition and completed a B.Mus. with honors from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. She studied composition at several institutions around Europe with notable teachers: The Royal College of Music with Peter Racine Fricker (1961–63), the Darmstädter Ferienkurse with Gottfried Michael Koenig (1963–64), the Hochschule für Musik Köln, and also in the Netherlands. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Lockwood performed and composed around Europe but made London her home, having returned there in 1964. Hunter College is a public university in New York City. Composers Recordings, Inc. (CRI) was an American record label dedicated to the recording of contemporary classical music by American composers. It was founded in 1954 by Otto Luening, Douglas Moore, and Oliver Daniel, and based in New York City. The label released over 600 recordings on LP, cassette, and CD. It went out of business in 2003 due to financial pressures, and the rights to CRI's recordings were transferred to New World Records in 2006. Harmonia Mundi is an independent record label which specializes in classical music, jazz, and world music (on the World Village label). It was founded in France in 1958 and is now a subsidiary of PIAS Entertainment Group. Its Latin name ''harmonia mundi'' translates as "harmony of the world". History In the 1950s, two music entrepreneurs, Frenchman Bernard Coutaz and German Rudolf Ruby, met by chance on a train journey and started a friendship based on their musical interests. Lovely Music (full name: Lovely Music Ltd.) is an American record label devoted to new American music. Based in New York City, the label was founded in 1978 by Mimi Johnson, an outgrowth of her nonprofit production company Performing Artservices Inc. Jonathan Elliott
Jonathan Elliott is an American composer and teacher. Born in 1962, Elliott grew up in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, studying piano from the age of six. He went on to study composition at Vassar College, where his teachers included Annea Lockwood and the pianist Todd Crow; Elliott subsequently received his PhD from the University of Chicago, where he studied with Ralph Shapey and Shulamit Ran. He received two Broadcast Music, Inc. Student Composer awards in 1985 and 1987. Elliott is currently composer in residence at Saint Ann's School, in Brooklyn, New York, where he has taught since 1988. He previously taught at Chicago, Vassar, and Bard College. He has received fellowships from Yaddo, the American Composers Forum, and the MacDowell Colony (1989, 1990), and has been in residence at institutions such as the University of Florida.
