Anne Collins (born 1952Holmes, Gillian, ed. ''Who's Who of Canadian Women, 1999-2000''. University of Toronto Press, 1999.) is a Canadian writer, editor and publishing executive who won the Governor General's Award for English-language non-fiction in 1988. Born in Whitby, Ontario, Collins earned a Bachelor of Arts from York University and has held a wide range of writing and editorial jobs in the Canadian publishing and magazine industry. The publisher at Knopf Random Canada Publishing Group and vice-president of Random House of Canada, Collins has also written the award-winning ''In the Sleep Room: The Story of The CIA Brainwashing Experiments in Canada''.Mark Medley. The University of Toronto Press is a Canadian university press founded in 1901. Although it was founded in 1901, the press did not actually publish any books until 1911. The press originally printed only examination books and the university calendar. Its first scholarly book was a work by a classics professor at University College, Toronto. The press took control of the university bookstore in 1933. It employed a novel typesetting method to print issues of the ''Canadian Journal of Mathematics'', founded in 1949. Governor General's Award For English-language Non-fiction
The Governor General's Award for English-language non-fiction is a Canadian literary award that annually recognizes one Canadian writer for a non-fiction book written in English. Since 1987 it is one of fourteen Governor General's Awards for Literary Merit, seven each for creators of English- and French-language books. Originally presented by the Canadian Authors Association, the Governor General's Awards program became a project of the Canada Council for the Arts in 1959. The program was created in 1937 and inaugurated that November for 1936 publications in two English-language categories, conventionally called the 1936 Governor General's Awards. Beginning in 1942 there were two winners annually, with separate awards presented for creative non-fiction and academic non-fiction; however, this was discontinued after the 1958 awards, and then returned to a single non-fiction category.
