Anna McClarmonde Chase
Anna McClarmonde Chase (also Ann Chase; 1809 – 1874) was an American merchant and spy for the United States during the Mexican–American War. Born in Ireland, she emigrated to the U.S. in 1824. She spent time in Philadelphia and New Orleans before settling in Tampico, Mexico, where she was a merchant and lived with her husband, the U.S. consul to Mexico. During the war, she spied on troop movements, spread disinformation and relayed information to the U.S. Navy. Her information led to the capture of Tampico and she gained the nickname "Heroine of Tampico". Early life Anna McClarmonde was born in 1809 in northern Ireland. Her father died in 1818 and her family immigrated to the United States in 1824. Her mother died a year after their arrival and Anna went to live with her brother in Philadelphia. The Home Squadron was part of the United States Navy in the mid-19th century. Organized as early as 1838, ships were assigned to protect coastal commerce, aid ships in distress, suppress piracy and the Atlantic slave trade, make coastal surveys, and train ships to relieve others on distant stations. David Conner (naval Officer)
Commodore David Conner (1792 – 20 March 1856) was an officer of the United States Navy. He served in the War of 1812 and led the Home Squadron during the Mexican–American War. He led the successful naval assault during the siege of Veracruz which included the landing of 10,000 U.S. troops, the largest U.S. military amphibious assault at the time. He served on the Board of Navy Commissioners; as the first Chief of the Bureau of Construction, Equipment, and Repair; as a Special Diplomatic Agent to Mexico and commanded the Philadelphia Naval Yard.
