Angola, Indiana
Angola is a city in Pleasant Township, Steuben County, Indiana, United States. The population was 8,612 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Steuben County. Angola was founded by Thomas Gale and Cornelius Gilmore on June 28, 1838, and is home to Trine University. The town is served by I-69 and the Indiana Toll Road (I-80 and I-90). History The Angola post office has been in operation since 1838. Some of the first settlers came from Angola, New York, and they named their new home after their old one. The Angola Commercial Historic District, Steuben County Courthouse, and Steuben County Jail are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Steuben County Jail
Steuben County Jail is a historic jail located at Angola, Steuben County, Indiana. It was built in 1877, and is a -story, brick and concrete building with Second Empire style design elements. It consists of an irregular main section with a rectangular prison wing at the rear. A porch was enclosed in 1961 and wing added in 1971. The main section is topped by a slate mansard roof and has an elaborate tower with a pyramidal roof and elaborate cupola. Angola Commercial Historic District is a national historic district located at Angola, Steuben County, Indiana. The district encompasses 49 contributing buildings, 1 contributing site, and 2 contributing objects in the central business district of Shelbyville. It developed between about 1861 and the 1960, and includes notable examples of Italianate, Romanesque Revival, Beaux-Arts, Classical Revival, Late Gothic Revival, and Art Deco style architecture. Angola, New York
Angola is a village in the town of Evans in Erie County, New York, United States. Located east of Lake Erie, the village is southwest of downtown Buffalo. As of the 2010 Census, Angola had a population of 2,127. An unincorporated community known as Angola on the Lake, with a population of 1,675, lies between Angola village and Lake Erie. History The community was previously called "Evans Station". ''Circa'' 1854 or 1855, a post office was established there, bearing the name "Angola". The first postmaster was John H. Andrus, who later became county clerk. Trine University is a private university in Angola, Indiana. It was founded in 1884 and offers degrees in the arts and sciences, business, education, and engineering. Trine University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
