Angeles Brewing And Malting Company
The Angeles Brewing and Malting Company was a brewery that operated in Port Angeles, Washington. The company is notable for having owned a steamboat, the ''Albion'', that was sunk in a collision on Puget Sound. Business The company began doing business in 1901. It purchased the small steamship ''Albion'' to haul full kegs of beer to various cities on Puget Sound. In 1910, the company suffered two major reverses. First it was placed in receivership in April and then in May ''Albion'' was struck in a collision at sea and sank. Port Angeles ( ) is a city and county seat of Clallam County, Washington, United States. With a population of 19,960 as of the 2020 census, it is the largest city in the county. The population was estimated at 20,134 in 2021. The city's harbor was dubbed (Port of Our Lady of the Angels) by Spanish explorer in 1791. By the mid-19th century, after settlement by English speakers from the United States, the name was shortened and partially anglicized to its current form, Port Angeles Harbor. Albion (steamboat)
''Albion'' was a steamboat which ran on Puget Sound from 1898 to 1924. For part of its existence, ''Albion'' served as a beer delivery vessel for Washington state's Angeles Brewing and Malting Company. It was involved in a 1910 collision with the steamship ''Chippewa''. Career ''Albion'' was built at Coupeville, Washington by Capt. H.B. Lovejoy, who intended the vessel to be sold for service on the Yukon River according to one source or Cook Inlet according to another. Power was supplied by an innovative compound steam engine devised by R.D. Ross. According to a news report from 1910, ''Albion'' was actually taken up to Cook Inlet, but it was found that the headwaters of the inlet were too shallow to allow the vessel to operate, and so the ship was returned to Puget Sound.
